Cold and flu season is a good reminder that your immune system depends on how well your body functions day to day. You can support it by focusing on the basics that actually matter:

• Take your vitamins as directed, especially if you have known deficiencies
• Prioritize quality sleep, this is when immune regulation and repair occur
• Stay hydrated to support circulation and immune cell activity
• Wash your hands regularly to reduce exposure and spread

Chiropractic care supports this process by helping the body move and function more efficiently. Why you are taller in the morning than at night - for a little while at least....

What’s happening
While you sleep, gravity is not compressing your spine. The discs between your vertebrae slowly rehydrate and expand. By morning, the spine is at its most decompressed state. Once you are upright and moving, gravity, sitting, and repetitive loading gradually compress those discs again, so height decreases by evening.

How much difference
For most adults, the change is about 0.5 to 1 inch from morning to night. That range varies based on age, disc health, posture, activity level, and body weight.

Why posture matters
Poor posture and prolonged sitting accelerate daily compression. Good posture, movement breaks, and spinal mobility slow it down. This does not mean you can avoid compression entirely, it means you can manage how quickly it happens.

What this tells us
Spines are dynamic structures. Height loss during the day is normal, but excessive stiffness or pain is not something to ignore.

How you sit matters more than how long you sit. Slouching or leaning forward for hours increases strain on the lower back, neck, and shoulders. A supportive chair, feet flat on the floor, hips slightly higher than knees, and your screen at eye level can reduce unnecessary spinal stress. Posture is not about sitting perfectly, it is about reducing load on the spine throughout the day.

Upper back tension is common with desk work and screen time. Gentle stretching throughout the day can help reduce stiffness and support healthier movement.
