WHAT IS MILD COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT?

Your keys aren't where you left them.

Your doctor's appointment was forgotten.

The name of that acquaintance escapes you.

Concentration is a problem for you.

Especially if you're an older adult or have a family history of Alzheimer's disease, these instances can be alarming. Do you have early signs of dementia or are you simply dehydrated, having a bad day, or feeling anxious?

We tend to jump to the worst-case scenario, especially if we've seen someone living with Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia.

Even though you may be experiencing minor signs of memory loss or confusion, it is not necessarily a sign of dementia. According to certain criteria, you may be suffering from mild cognitive impairment.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DEMENTIA AND ALZHEIMER'S?

There is a tendency to use Alzheimer's and dementia interchangeably as if they were the same disease.

However, this isn't true.

As a matter of fact, one of them isn't a disease at all.

WHAT IS ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE?

Alzheimer's disease affects each individual differently. A few people survive only a short time after being diagnosed. It is not uncommon for some people to live for twenty years or longer. There are those who progress through the disease quickly, and there are those who progress slowly. In addition, the type and degree of symptoms vary.

Each Alzheimer's journey is unique, but specialists have identified five general stages. Identifying these stages early on can help you or a loved one determine the best treatment and course of action.

FINDING ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE - BEFORE SYMPTOMS APPEAR

Most of the time, we don't realize we're sick until we begin to experience symptoms. We sneeze, cough, or feel a sore throat coming on. We're already sick by the time we have symptoms like these. It's too late to prevent the flu or cold. It's simply a matter of riding it out.

Wouldn't it be great if we could prevent illness before symptoms appeared? This would be convenient for colds and flu. It would change the course of something like Alzheimer's disease.

5 SIGNS YOUR LOVED ONE NEEDS MEMORY CARE

When your loved one receives an official diagnosis of dementia or Alzheimer's, it's time to consider full-time memory care. It may seem premature to you, but studies show that moving someone with a memory loss diagnosis into a facility before their symptoms compound is better for them long term. As a result, they can make more informed decisions about their care and are, therefore, less likely to feel frustrated or confused than if they were moved elsewhere after their symptoms intensified or worsened.

It can be difficult to make the decision that your loved one needs memory care. Bader House is here to help you make an informed decision.

The Uncommon Care we provide to people with memory loss sets us apart from the competition. There is more to our locations than just assisted living. Our homes are communities where staff is expertly trained in memory loss care.

KNOW THE DIFFERENCE: MEMORY CARE VS NURSING HOME

Making the right decisions becomes more challenging and emotional as dementia progresses, making it more challenging to understand the care options available to your loved one with dementia.

To find the best senior care, it's essential to know the differences between memory care residences and nursing homes, as well as the types of care they offer. Also, remember that assisted living and memory care communities are quite different from each other. I'll discuss this topic in another post.
