Shoulder pain is a common condition that can limit a person's ability to perform daily activities and impact their quality of life. Shoulder pain can result from a variety of causes such as rotator cuff injuries, arthritis, or overuse. Physical therapy can be an effective way to manage shoulder pain and improve shoulder function.
Assessment: A physical therapist will perform a comprehensive evaluation to determine the cause of the shoulder pain and create a personalized treatment plan.
Pain Management: Physical therapists use various techniques such as manual therapy, modalities, and exercises to reduce pain and inflammation.
Stretching and Strengthening Exercises: Physical therapists design stretching and strengthening exercises to improve flexibility, range of motion, and strength in the shoulder and surrounding muscles.
Posture and Body Mechanics Training: Physical therapists can help improve posture and body mechanics to reduce the risk of shoulder pain and injury.
Manual Therapy: Physical therapists can perform manual therapy techniques such as soft tissue mobilization and joint mobilization to improve range of motion and alleviate pain.
Education: Physical therapists can also provide education on proper posture, body mechanics, and home exercise programs to help patients manage their shoulder pain and prevent future injuries.
Physical therapy can be a highly effective way to manage shoulder pain and improve shoulder function. A physical therapist will create a personalized treatment plan and provide guidance and support throughout the rehabilitation process to help patients achieve their goals and return to their desired activities.
Here are some exercises recommended by physical therapists:
Pendulum Exercise: Stand with your good arm supporting your body and let the affected arm hang down. Move the affected arm in small circles, gradually increasing the size of the circles. Repeat 10 times in each direction.
Shoulder Blade Squeezes: Stand with your arms at your sides and squeeze your shoulder blades together. Hold for 5 seconds and release. Repeat 10 times.
Elbow Extension: Hold a light weight with your affected arm and slowly raise it above your head. Lower it back down to the starting position. Repeat 10 times.
Shoulder Shrugs: Stand with your arms at your sides and shrug your shoulders up towards your ears. Hold for 5 seconds and release. Repeat 10 times.
Wall Slides: Stand with your back against a wall and slowly slide your arms up and down the wall. Focus on maintaining good posture throughout the exercise. Repeat 10 times.
Remember to always warm up before beginning these exercises and to listen to your body. If you experience pain, stop and seek the advice of a physical therapist. A physical therapist can create a personalized treatment plan and provide modifications to these exercises as needed to best manage your shoulder pain.

Exercises for Toe Walking

Toe walking is a gait pattern where a person walks on the balls of their feet instead of the flat of their feet. While it can be a normal habit for young children, persistent toe walking in older children and adults can cause problems such as calf tightness, knee pain, and balance issues. Physical therapy can help correct this gait pattern and improve overall function.
Here are some exercises recommended by physical therapists:

Heel Raises: Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and raise up onto the balls of your feet. Lower yourself back down to the ground, feeling the stretch in your calf muscles. Repeat 10-20 times.

Toe Taps: Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and alternate tapping your toes to the ground. Focus on landing on the whole foot, not just the toes. Repeat 10-20 times on each foot.

Heel Walks: Walk forward on your heels, lifting your toes off the ground. Focus on landing on the heel first and then rolling forward onto the rest of the foot. Repeat 10-20 times.

Towel Scrunches: Place a towel on the ground and scrunch it towards you with your toes. Repeat 10-20 times on each foot.

Balance Exercises: Stand on one foot and hold for 30 seconds. Repeat on the other foot. Progress to doing this exercise with your eyes closed. Repeat 10-20 times.

If your child presents with toe walking and/or you need further information, you can contact our physical therapy clinic for an individualized evaluation.

Herniated Discs: Exercises for Herniated Discs and Back Pain

A herniated disc occurs when the soft inner material of a spinal disc leaks out and places pressure on surrounding nerves. This can cause back pain, numbness, or weakness in the legs or arms. Here's what you need to know about herniated discs and how physical therapy can help:
Causes: Herniated discs can occur due to a variety of reasons, including age-related degeneration, trauma, repetitive strain, and excessive weight.
Physical Therapy Assessment: A physical therapist will perform a comprehensive evaluation to determine the cause of the back pain and create a personalized treatment plan.
Pain Management: Physical therapists use various techniques such as manual therapy, modalities, and exercises to reduce pain and inflammation.
Stretching and Strengthening Exercises: Physical therapists design stretching and strengthening exercises to improve flexibility, range of motion, and strength in the back and surrounding muscles.
Core Strengthening: Physical therapists can design a core strengthening program to improve stability and support for the back.
Manual Therapy: Physical therapists can perform manual therapy techniques such as soft tissue mobilization and joint mobilization to alleviate pain and improve range of motion.
Physical therapy exercises for herniated discs in the back include:
McKenzie Extension: Lie on your stomach with your hands under your forehead. Gradually lift your upper body off the floor, keeping your arms straight. Hold for 5 seconds and lower back down. Repeat 10 times.
Pelvic Tilts: Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Tighten your abdominal muscles and tilt your pelvis upward, then relax and lower your pelvis. Repeat 10 times.
Hamstring Stretch: Lie on your back with one leg straight and the other leg bent. Keep your back flat on the floor and use a towel or strap to gently pull the straight leg towards your chest. Hold for 30 seconds and repeat with the other leg.
Knee to Chest Stretch: Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Hold one knee to your chest and hold for 30 seconds. Repeat with the other knee.
Physical therapy can be a highly effective way to manage herniated discs and improve function. A physical therapist will create a personalized treatment plan and provide guidance and support throughout the rehabilitation process to help patients achieve their goals and return to their desired activities.

Can you get in the pool if you have Lymphedemaโ‰๏ธ
Simple answer is YESโ—๏ธ.
When the affected limb is under water, there are important benefits

โœ…๏ธwater acts as a resistance during exercises for muscle strengthening
โœ…๏ธyou get relief from gravity and can move the limbs better.
โœ…๏ธ the hydrostatic pressure from the water serves as compression.

โญ•๏ธโญ•๏ธ As always, please check with your physician before starting any exercise program.
Use caution and avoid pool water if you are allergic or skin is sensitive to chlorine, you have skin infection or open wounds ..
