Have you considered teeth whiting for your child?

There are various teeth whitening products that can be used to whiten teeth for your older child. Professional teeth whitening products are somewhat expensive while over the counter products cost a bit less. You must first determine how compliant you feel that your child will be in completely following all of the product recommendations.

IN-OFFICE TEETH WHITENING
Professional teeth whitening products require two separate office visits. At the first appointment, impressions are taken of the teeth that are to be whitened. The impressions are then made into clear, soft plastic trays that can be used with a bleaching gel compound to whiten the teeth. At the second appointment, the plastic trays are fit to the teeth and complete product instructions are reviewed. It will be important for your child to follow all recommendations to obtain the optimum results.

OVER THE COUNTER TEETH WHITENING PRODUCTS
Over the counter products such as Crest White Strips are available in the dental hygiene area of grocery stores and discount centers. Over the counter products differ from whitening gels dispensed by the dentist in formulation and strength. However, if you are interested in a cost effective procedure and determining the compliance of your child, these products may be right for you.

It is important to understand that with both professional products and over the counter products, compliance is important. Improvement in teeth shade is usually seen in about two weeks. However, the length of time that the teeth remain lighter is dependent on several factors. Drinking tea, dark sodas, and even regular diets can cause the teeth to darken. Teeth whitening is not a permanent procedure and "touch-up" whitening with the product is usually necessary.

What are sealants, and why would my child benefit from them?

Sometimes brushing is not enough, especially when it comes to those hard-to-reach spots in your child’s mouth. It is difficult for a toothbrush to reach between the small cracks and grooves on teeth. If left alone, those tiny areas can develop tooth decay. Sealants give your child’s teeth extra protection against decay and help prevent cavities.

Dental sealants are plastic resins that bond and harden in the deep grooves on the tooth’s surface. When a tooth is sealed, the tiny grooves become smooth, and are less likely to harbor plaque. With sealants, brushing becomes easier and more effective against tooth decay.

Sealants are typically applied to children’s teeth after their permanent teeth have erupted as a preventive measure against tooth decay. It is more common to seal “permanent” teeth rather than “baby” teeth, but every patient has unique needs, and the dentist will recommend sealants on a case-by-case basis.

Sealants last from three to five years, although it is fairly common to see adults with sealants still intact from childhood. A dental sealant only provides protection when it is fully intact so if your child’s sealants come off, let the dentist know, and schedule an appointment for your child’s teeth to be re-sealed.

The purpose of the initial exam is to ensure that your child is in good dental health, begin a preventive dental program, and establish a dental home in the event of an emergency. These first visits generally entail a simple visual exam of your child’s teeth and gums. We count the teeth, and we might perform a very gentle cleaning. We’ll also look for any developmental abnormalities. Very small children rarely have serious oral health issues. The first visit at our office helps them become comfortable with Dr. Judd and start learning more about taking care of their teeth.

Won't children just loose their "baby" teeth?

Primary "baby" teeth are important for many reasons. They help children speak clearly and chew naturally. They also aid in forming a path and holding a space that permanent teeth can follow when they are ready to erupt. It is important to maintain the health of primary teeth to avoid problems with developing permanent teeth.
