Holiday Miracles: From Trauma to Triumph 💙🎄

Before his accident, he was an active 40-year-old attorney with a full life ahead of him. After a devastating motorcycle crash left him with multiple fractures and completely dependent for mobility and self-care, the road forward felt overwhelming.

When he arrived at Acute Rehabilitation Hospital of Plano, he required maximum assistance and was non-ambulatory. But with determination—and the incredible news that he was about to become a father—he pushed forward every day.

Through expert care, compassion, and teamwork, our therapy team helped him rebuild strength, confidence, and independence step by step. He often shared how supported he felt—not just physically, but personally—by every therapist, nurse, and physician who believed in his recovery.

After discharge, he emphasizes how critical the transition to outpatient therapy was. For months, he attended therapy 2–3 times per week at Acute Rehabilitation Hospital of Plano’s outpatient therapy program, continuing to build strength, improve mobility, and reclaim independence one step at a time.
Today, he is home, back to work at his law practice, thriving, and celebrating life with his new baby. He shares: “I wouldn’t be able to walk or carry my baby if it weren’t for the men and women at Acute Rehabilitation Hospital of Plano.”

This holiday season, his story is a reminder of hope, resilience, and the miracles that happen when courage meets compassionate care. 💙✨

Meet Kathy Merrill, Occupational Therapist at Acute Rehabilitation Hospital of Plano!

Kathy brings a wealth of clinical expertise and compassion to every patient she works with. She approaches therapy with a focus on each patient’s cognitive, physical and emotional well-being, understanding that being in someone’s vulnerable space is both a privilege and a responsibility. Through one-on-one therapy and a joyful, supportive environment, she tailors her care to meet each individual’s unique needs.

Kathy is also our creative force for recreational therapy. From tailoring engaging activities to lifting spirits, she brings cheer, ingenuity, and expertise to every session – helping patients reach their goals while making the process fun and meaningful. Patients often share that her holistic approach makes them feel seen, heard and truly cared for.

At Acute Rehab, Kathy doesn’t just provide therapy, she creates a space for whole person healing and renewed independence. 🙌
