🌿 Client Story (First‑Person): Finding Calm Through Equine‑Assisted Therapy
When I first came to Graze Academy, I felt like my life was constantly spinning. My anxiety was out of control, I was snapping at people I cared about, and even driving had become a battle — the road rage, the tension, the feeling that everything set me off. My relationships weren’t healthy, and deep down I knew I was stuck in patterns that weren’t serving me. I had never been around horses before, but something in me hoped this might be different.
Walking into the arena for the first time, I was nervous. I didn’t know what to expect. But the horse I worked with didn’t judge me, didn’t ask me to explain myself — he just responded to what I was feeling. When I was tense, he was tense. When I softened, he softened. It was the first time I truly saw my anxiety reflected back at me in a way that felt safe.
Session by session, I learned how to breathe again. How to slow down. How to notice the moment my body started to tighten or my thoughts began to spiral. The grounding I practiced with the horse started showing up in my everyday life. I wasn’t exploding in anger as often. I wasn’t reacting to everything around me. I could actually pause — something I didn’t think was possible for me.
As I became more regulated, I started making different choices. I ended the unhealthy relationships I’d been holding onto. I began imagining a life that felt calmer and more aligned with who I want to be. I’m even looking at moving to a new city — something I never would have had the confidence to consider before.
Today, I feel more in control of myself than I ever have. I’m not perfect, but I’m grounded. I’m aware. I’m learning to trust myself. The horses didn’t just help me manage my anxiety — they helped me find a version of myself I didn’t know I could be.
