We have a culture obsessed with happiness and are sold happiness everywhere. And of course it certainly makes sense to want relief from our current conditions. Yet if there are so many seeming “miracle cures” why does it seem like people are more unhappy than ever? At times it seems like the pressure to be happy can cause a host of other issues such as more stress, FOMO, spiritual bypassing/repression of difficult emotions, and self recrimination. Viktor Frankl’s brilliant quote touches on an answer. Happiness (as well as inner and outer approval via success) is a byproduct from the habits we foster daily and the result of discovering values which serve us through fostering purpose and connection. So if happiness seems elusive, maybe it’s time to focus on discovering what makes life meaningful FOR YOU. This makes the good times sweeter and the bad times easier to bear. To quote Frankl again: “Those who have a why can put up with any how.”

i love this podcast. lynn lyons is an anxiety expert who focuses on the family. she is right on about the dangers of pathologizing normal every day life and how this creates negative expectations that problems are permanent. this applies to teens but definitely to adults too.
anxiety= overestimation of the problem and underestimation of your skills and abilities to deal with the problem. therapy helps you gain skills and abilities as well as recognize the ones you already have so you can shift your identity from “patient” to “problem solver.” highly highly recommend adding this to your podcast roster!!

This month’s book recommendation. This book provides a multitude of useful skills as well as a revolutionarily different way of approaching understanding of symptoms, eschewing DSM model. Especially useful for those who feel their progress in therapy has been stalled or they have “had the book thrown at them,” getting a variety of different diagnoses from providers that just don’t feel right. Did you know you could not only rent this book from the library for free but also could listen to it read by the author for free from the library on the Libby app? I listen to it as a podcast while doing care tasks or taking my morning walk.

Continuing with self love series… You’re lovable and acceptable because you’re human. Full stop. That doesn’t mean you’re necessarily easy to be in relationship with. Accountability and self awareness help lubricate the gears of relationships so you can get the love you need to grow. Check in with yourself and you’re relationships. How accountable and self aware are you being? How accountable and self aware do you perceive your loved ones?

Let yourself be loved!! I’m serious!! Yes, it is scary, no you are not alone in feeling scared by this because genuine love and intimacy requires vulnerability. Identify some people in your life who are willing and able to love you and seek them out. Get vulnerable. Get real. See what happens and then let’s talk about it in therapy. Vulnerability is the shortcut to intimacy. Love is the shortcut to transformative growth. We change when we feel safe and to be safe is to be loved. If you can’t identify anyone in your life ready willing and able to love you and co-create safety with you let’s identify together what loving you looks like, what safety is for you. Are you doing this for you? Are you admitting that you’re deserving of this? And then let’s go find some people to love up on you because it works!

Thinking of “the work” as evolution instead of change somehow takes some of the pressure off… evolution is inevitable and adaptive, resistance is futile 😉 and of course we can never hate ourselves into someone we love.

New blog post! Link is in bio to my website

Addresses things I have been thinking about recently including Taylor Swift's "Anti-Hero," identity, ego, and self transformation, therapy as the hero's journey, accountability, and shame, and of course I had to throw some archetypes in there. Check it out and let me know if it resonates with you.

I know I am not the only one who has had Taylor Swift's new hit song "Anti-Hero" stuck in my head on repeat. The song skillfully touches on themes of negative identity, accountability, and ego. The...

Ever heard the quote: "everywhere you go, there you are"? Changing relationships can feel that way too, making a move and realizing your repeating the same cycles again and again. Sometimes a different person, job or place really does make a big difference. But it's also worth noticing what that relationship is bringing to light. It might be the insight that you deserve and are ready for better, it might be patterns in relationships that you have been unwittingly carrying around for a LONG time. Relationships of any kind are a crucible (situation where different elements interact, creating something new) where we learn more about ourselves. Food for thought: what are your relationships teaching you about yourself currently?

Getting in touch with your innate sense of creativity, flexibility, imagination, and play is a crucial and underrated way to create lasting changes that are personal to you without getting stuck in the mire of endless pathologizing of self and using clunky coping skills because it’s what “you’re supposed to do.”
