The VA recently issued an interim final rule on February 17, 2026, that explicitly directs adjudicators to base disability ratings on a veteran's "actual functional impairment" while taking prescribed medication.

This rule, which amends 38 C.F.R. § 4.10, effectively mandates that if medication or treatment reduces a veteran's symptoms, the disability rating must reflect that lowered level of impairment.

I met him once.

All I remember is that he gave me hope — right there in a small town like Walnut Grove, Mississippi.

He had seen division. He had lived through struggle. He had endured injustice. And yet, what he carried wasn’t bitterness — it was belief.

Now that he has passed, I think about what that hope really meant.

It wasn’t about Black or White.
It wasn’t about male or female.
It wasn’t about labels or chosen pronouns.

It was about finding common ground.

Park where you disagree.
Build where you agree.

We don’t have to think the same to work together.
We don’t have to mirror each other to respect each other.

If we focus on where we align — safer neighborhoods, better schools, opportunity for our children, dignity for our elders — we can build greater communities.

That’s the hope I felt.
That’s the lesson I’m holding onto.

Let’s choose unity over noise.
Let’s build.
Let’s love each other.
