Did you know? Falling can occur because of disruptions to the body’s sensory and/or motor systems, causing loss of balance. To maintain balance, the brain must receive and interpret information from several different senses:

▪️ Vision (from the eyes) helps orient you to your environment.
▪️ Proprioception, or joint position sense (from your joints and muscles) helps to tell your brain where your body is in space.
▪️ The vestibular system (from the inner ear) senses motion, equilibrium, and head position.

Based on these inputs, the brain sends information to different muscles of the body to help maintain balance. Find the FYZICAL nearest you for a balance screening today, by visiting: https://hubs.li/Q02QVJ9M0

How can you tell if your balance needs improvement?

Follow the single-leg stance test below to see if balance training could help:

▪️ Stand next to a counter, sink, or chair with your hand gently grasping the counter surface.
▪️ Leave your eyes open and put your hands on your hips. Grasp the surface or put your leg down if you start to feel unsteady during the test.
▪️ Stand on one leg unassisted and have a loved one time you once your foot leaves the ground. Stop the timer if you grasp the counter or when you put your second foot down.

If you were not able to stand on one leg for at least 10 seconds, your balance may need work! Find the clinic nearest you to learn more about our balance training program: https://hubs.li/Q02FWx2q0

Our patient, Margo, began running races to honor her son and celebrate his life after he passed away from a rare form of brain cancer.

Margo began training with friends for the Hartford Half Marathon last year when she started to experience severe ankle pain and was diagnosed with Tendinitis. Margo began therapy at FYZICAL to help manage the injury. She worked together with her physical therapist, focusing on muscle weakness, strengthening exercises targeting Margo’s calves and arches, as well as a variety of other exercises to help relieve pain. Margo then ran her first half marathon last October, pain-free! To read Margo's full story, click the image below.

A West Hartford elementary school teacher is running several road races this year as a way to honor her son who died from brain cancer nearly two years ago.

Check out this testimonial from Janice at our Southington clinic!

"I received post-surgery physical therapy after an operation for my fractured left shoulder, elbow, and wrist from a fall. I knew this was the place for me from my first phone call to the clinic! I enjoyed my first session, meeting the therapists and having them address my questions and concerns right away. They made me feel very welcome! I felt totally comfortable with my primary therapist, and they used many distractions during the sessions to help me get through the difficult exercises. All of the therapists were extremely knowledgeable and answered every question during my visit. This actually made me look forward to my physical therapy sessions! Before physical therapy, I was nervous, anxious and unsure of the outcome. I now feel very happy with my progress and I will dearly miss all of the staff!"
