The soil tests showed great improvement and we're very excited for the next season. Thank you Fredrick Zwiefel for tilling the plot this week! We've had some unseasonably warm weather and were able to spread the needed minerals yesterday.

Lots of beautiful tomatoes coming in. We delivered the first boxes yesterday and they taste amazing!

Spring 2016 - First year of "The Tomato Project"

Started by preparing the beds (Thank you Fred!). Then applied a custom blend of minerals based on the soil test from International Ag Labs. We then laid 4 rows of drip tape per bed, pulled fabric, torched the planting holes and planted. We then used row cover poly to capture some early season heat and speed early growth. One of the unique aspects of this project is that we are training the tomatoes to grow horizontal, so the trellis wires make it look almost like a vineyard, except the beds are 4' wide.

In the fall of 2015 we broke ground for the larger project for the coming year. We got the cedar posts and started prepping all the support frames. We drilled the post holes and large Ellen White tree planting holes with a Bobcat (Thank you Paul and Harlan!). We then set the posts and worked on filling the tree planting holes (Thank you Blaine and Aidan!). After a whole lot of work all the posts were set and we called it good for 2015.

The start of the Tomato Project in the spring of 2015. Leah and Emma helped dad dig a big hole 3' wide and 3' deep. They were so proud! We filled it with 3 distinct layers using the Ellen White tree planting method. They helped plant one small cherry tomato in that hole and it grew like crazy. Of course the mineral amendments, soil drenches and foliar sprays helped a bunch too! We ran the stems in a horizontal configuration using t-posts and wire. The end result was a huge tomato plant with over 4,200 super sweet tomatoes! There were way more tomatoes per cluster than most people have ever seen. One picture shows a cluster with 37 tomatoes and 45 tomatoes. The other picture shows the grand winner with 71 flower blossoms on one cluster... this is NOT normal! The last picture was taken at the end of the season in 2015 just after a killing frost. The plant had stems 12-14' long. If this was grown in a vertical configuration we would need really tall ladders to harvest. As it was all the fruit was in easy reach. From this small beginning the Tomato Project was born...

Heirloom Tomato Salad with Eggplant and Haloumi

This is what Executive Chef Aaron Slavicek of Bar La Grassa in Minneapolis created last year with tomatoes from The Tomato Project. It was absolutely amazing and we can't wait to see what he does this year! Will he run with this killer dish again or try to top it?

This is what he had to say about the tomatoes:
