When you’ve walked a family through a challenging birth or prayed with them over a difficult diagnosis, at the end of the day, they know you are more than just another provider.

Life is full of so many ordinary yet spectacular moments. You won’t be disappointed when you invest in your patients. The rewards will far outlast the treasures of this world.

Side note: Welcome earthside baby Jayde. Your arrival was as eventful as you are cute, baby girl. Those sweet, squishy cheeks are the best…. ❤️.

The Long Road

Sometimes the “long road to here” involves a challenging, hard birth. (I mean, not usually at OUR gentle births😉😉😉, but still…-it could be a thing-). And almost all births seem long at the time. We do DO that. We spin babies and squeeze hips and shake apples. We carry herbs and tinctures and know baby-moving tricks as we encourage mommas to listen to their bodies and to their babies- to DO that. We got you….on that long-seeming road of labor. We also wait patiently for you here, if your previous path was difficult and hard, if you relive a past painful experience wondering if it could’ve or should’ve been different, if midwifery heals some broken part of you from the past.

Other times “the long road” is a remarkable set of circumstances that synergistically combine to bring a rainbow baby earthside after a challenging battle with fertility or loss. (After one or multiple, if the rainbows are doubles or yes, even more.) And we do DO that. We draw labs and balance hormones and work with families through functional, holistic, and nutritional fertility to support the body prior to, throughout, and after pregnancy. We got you on that long road of fertility ups and downs. We understand that long, long road.

But sometimes…. (((sometimes, sweet momma….))) ….sometimes the long road here is nothing less than 1000 individual, unpredictable, heaven sent miracles—-the collective answered prayer of friends and neighbors, family and midwives we haven’t met in person that stand in the gap on this very private road. It’s the hopes and dreams of starry-eyed siblings, the heartfelt tears of parents who’ve held each other and held their breath through many difficult days, a humble (but skilled) midwifery practice who’s God has brought us amazingly…. Right Here Baby.

He made a way. Isn’t she beautiful?

We have a lot of these little miracles on our calendar this year. Thank you Lord for trusting us with such an important task in this world. Hallelujah….

If you’re on a long road, friend, be encouraged. Call. We’d love to chat.

Look at that glow. If you know you know. ❤️

Jessie arrived in South Dakota searching for her first VBAC. After several cesareans, she knew her chances of vaginal birth with a knowledgeable, patient provider were growing slim. She persisted to advocate, interview, and prepare for her vaginal birth as her baby and belly grew closer to that day.

When labor started, her body knew just what to do. Despite previous battle scars, her uterus labored effectively and dilated successfully. Her sweet baby emerged into her husbands capable hands in a set of redemptive circumstances that somehow, in that fraction of a moment, righted the wrongs that had been done previously. What a privilege it is to share these moments with families. 🥹

If you’re seeking a vbac, find a provider who is nothing less than your greatest advocate and fiercest supporter. Ensure their skills are appropriate for the task you are undertaking together. Work cohesively to see your previous births in light of your current opportunity for advocacy and change.

Congratulations Jessie! You did it. We couldn’t be prouder of you. ❤️

There’s an awesome opportunity to have your birth photos used for the new birth matters website. If you want to participate, and help normalize excellent birth outcomes in South Dakota (or North Dakota 😉😉), do make sure to ask your photographer for a watermarked photo of any of the birth photos that you’d like to share. You will need a photo release from your hard-working photographer, which she will gladly supply for the asking. Thank you for your attention to this important idea. ❤️ Catherine Chaney

This morning, a little miracle gently entered this world, born into the water, into his Dad’s capable hands. Beside his laboring wife, dad quietly squeezed hips, offered positive affirmations, and supported his sweet wife. Their doula supported dad as he did homebirth dad stuff, so different than the hospital births we know. Mom breathed, moved, quietly sipped, and soaked in the supportive environment when she needed all this most- today- BIRTH day.

They weren’t experts in community birth. They haven’t even read the latest impact studies on birth environment related to newborn health. They haven’t had babies at home (before today.) But they knew they needed to be respected; they needed to trust their provider and the team that would care for their baby. As they weighed their local institutional policies and multiple options, and they became concerned.

With prayer, they hired an amazing homebirth team that empowered them, educated them, fussed over their proteins, tight ligaments, and hemoglobin levels, discussed nutrition, ideology, mental health, and clarity. There were no bright lights, no needles, no strangers, no chatter, no beeping, no buzzers, no shouting, no disrespect, no chaos, and no confusion shared in their sacred birth space. In the quiet, momma breathed through her birthing surges, moved intuitively with her labor, and rested between. Yes, medications, supplies, equipment, and the knowledge to use them appropriately are always tucked nearby if needed.

Breathing diligently through a particularly long contraction, mom’s eyes suddenly opened wide- the only sign something was suddenly very different. Her eyes met mine, her body stayed as relaxed as each contraction before, and I smiled and reminded her to breathe when she could, which she instinctively did. And just like that- 🌈 baby❤️.

The amazing thing from this midwife’s side of birth is watching families navigate important milestones in their own journey that impact not only their immediate birth, but the collective health and strength of their family moving forward. I’m incredibly blessed by these families! ….that proud look dad has handing his newborn baby to his wife, the tears of overcomers’ healing joy shared between them, the utter shock of a mom, when her undisturbed baby latches instinctively at the breast as a thank-you for the gentle process of normal birth.

What a great way to start May!! Congratulations little rainbow baby…you are so blessed. 🌈

Excited to share with you a sweet review from Martin Family! These little babies sure get to their first birthdays in a quick blink. ❤️ Cherish each moment. It all goes entirely too quickly!

But sometimes pushing in labor seems to last entirely too long. How did pushing go for you?

As we celebrated our little boy, James’, first birthday last week (March 1st), I reflected on my pregnancy with him, and the event of his birth. A few days after his birth, I had texted Tammi and told her that I would write a review for her and Dakota Midwifery, and send it to her later that week. I imagine she probably smiled to herself, amused by my naive ambition. At the time, I was feeling on top of the world. James’ birth had gone very well, and I felt much better and initially had much more energy after his birth than I did after the birth of our first son. “Surely I’ll have time to sit down for 20 minutes to write a review”, I thought. Well, here I am one year later. Although I wish I would have wrote this sooner, the responsibility of caring for an almost three-year old, and a new baby quickly caught up with me. However, I am excited to write this review now, one year later, and reflect on the blessing it was to work with Tammi, and the experience of bringing another child into the world in the comfort of my own home.

Upon first learning I was pregnant with our second child, my husband and I were faced with the decision of how and where we wanted to have the baby. Our first son was born in Pennsylvania, with a Mennonite midwife (who happened to be my husband’s aunt) at her house/birthing center, and we knew that we wanted to utilize a midwife again with this second birth, if possible. However, our options were limited here in South Dakota, and finding a midwife was more challenging. Expense was also a concern, since we do not have health insurance. A family friend gave us Tammi’s information, and after our first appointment with her, we knew we had made the right decision.

Although Tammi was always very professional, her friendly and personable character shone through. My husband and I enjoyed working with her. She is easy to talk to and get along with, and always wears a beautiful smile. She also interacted well with our first son, who was two and a half at the beginning of our appointments. Tammi allowed him to press the button on the machine she used to listen to Baby’s heartbeat, and he loved to feel included!

While there were certain tests and procedures that Tammi recommended, she was never pushy about any of them. She provided us with information about each one, (including papers with written explanations), the reasons why they were recommended, and answered any questions we had. Ultimately, though, she allowed us to make the decision that worked best for our family, without any judgement or criticism.

We also appreciated Tammi’s knowledge of herbs and natural home remedies. My husband and I both are naturally-minded and like to avoid conventional medical treatment (prescription medications, antibiotics, etc.) when possible. Tammi encouraged me to use herbs to strengthen my body during pregnancy and prepare my body for birth. She even generously gave me an entire tube of Arnica gel when I experienced some pregnancy related aches and pains.

That being said, we also appreciated her former medical background. Although James’ birth went well, I experienced unexpected heavy bleeding. Thankfully Tammi was able to quickly administer the proper drugs and dosages to stop the bleeding and prevent me from hemorrhaging and having to go to the hospital.
Tammi was also very good with communication. During my months of pregnancy, I could rely on Tammi to answer my texts or phone calls in a timely manner whenever I had questions or concerns. In the handbook I received at our very first appointment, there was a list of all the supplies I would need for the birth. In the weeks leading up to the big day, Tammi helped me review this list and ensure that I had everything I would need to be prepared.

When it came time for delivery, I was thankful to have Tammi there. She rushed to get to our home (she was over an hour away when I called!), but she remained on the phone with me the entire time I was in labor, during her drive to our house, talking me through each contraction. Her calm, reassuring presence, (both over the phone, and in person once she arrived), and her coaching during labor were a blessing. She told me to breathe through each contraction, and let my body push the baby down with each one, the way that it was naturally created to, rather than pushing and needlessly expending precious energy. This was contrary to the coaching I received during our first son’s birth, when I was instructed to push, and push hard, with each contraction. The difference between these two births was remarkable, and our second son’s birth, with the aid of Tammi’s coaching, was overall a much shorter and easier experience. Her birthing assistant Catherine, was also very helpful. After the birth was over, they both did a great job of cleaning up while allowing me and my husband and son time with our precious new baby. They also surprised us with a gift bag with items for me and Baby, including a container with enough herbs for three sitz baths. Tammi was available for appointments after the birth, and provided helpful information when I had questions and concerns about nursing and our son’s weight gain.

My family and I feel very fortunate to have had the privilege of working with Tammi and Catherine, and Dakota Midwifery. We are thankful for Tammi’s hard work and dedication to her clients, and look forward to working with her again someday, if/when the Lord decides to bless us with more children.
