🚑 Hands-On Training for Real-Life Care 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️

Platte Health Center Avera's providers, nurses, and other medical professionals throughout the community recently got hands-on with the Simulation in Motion–South Dakota (SIM-SD) training truck!

This mobile, high-tech unit brings realistic emergency simulations right to rural communities, boosting critical care skills and teamwork without ever leaving the parking lot.

The SIM program began in South Dakota through a partnership with Avera Health, Sanford Health, Monument Health (formerly Regional Health), and the SD Department of Health—thanks to support from the Helmsley Charitable Trust. Since its launch, the program has served as a blueprint for similar training initiatives in other states.

And yes… they were all totally thrilled for this photo opp. 😅👋

☀️ Did you know? Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S. — and 1 in 5 Americans will develop it at some point in their lives.

Sunscreen plays a key role in protecting against skin cancer, but it’s only effective when used properly. To protect your skin and reduce your risk of skin cancer, below are five common sunscreen mistakes — and how to avoid them:

1. Ignore the label👎🙈: Choose a sunscreen labeled broad-spectrum, water-resistant, and SPF 30 or higher for the best protection

2. Using too little🤏🧴: Most adults need about 1 oz of sunscreen to cover skin not covered by clothing. Apply 15 minutes before going outdoors, and reapply every 2 hours.

3. Applying only in sunny weather⛅️☁️: The sun emits harmful UV rays all year long. Even on cloudy days, up to 80% of UV rays can pe*****te your skin. Apply sunscreen every time you are outside, even on cloudy days.

4. Using an old bottle⌛🗓: The FDA requires that all sunscreens retain their original strength for at least 3 years. Throw out your sunscreen if it’s expired. If you buy a sunscreen that lacks an expiration date, write the purchase date on the bottle so that you know when to toss it out.

5. Relying solely on sunscreen☝️🕶: No sunscreen can block 100% of the sun’s UV rays. It's important to seek shade and wear sun-protective clothing, including a lightweight, long-sleeved shirt, pants, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses with UV protection, when possible. For more effective sun protection, select clothing with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) label.

Independence Day or Fourth of July?
Congress originally called the holiday "Fourth of July," not Independence Day. That name stuck even though the U.S. actually voted for independence on July 2, 1776. We celebrate on the 4th because that's when the Declaration was ratified. No matter what you call it, take a moment to honor those who gave their life or put their life on the line to protect our freedom. Happy Independence Day!

☀️ July is UV Safety Awareness Month! 🕶️

At Platte Health Center Avera, we're reminding everyone that protecting your skin isn’t just for the beach—it’s for every day! Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun can damage your skin in as little as 15 minutes, increasing your risk for skin cancer, premature aging, and eye damage.

✅ Tips to stay UV safe:
🧴 Use broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher)
🕶️ Wear sunglasses that block 100% of UVA & UVB rays
👒 Choose wide-brimmed hats and protective clothing
🌤️ Seek shade, especially between 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
🔁 Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours—or after swimming or sweating

Taking small steps today can protect your skin for a lifetime. Stay sun smart, folks! 🌞💛

State health officials have confirmed South Dakota’s first 2 measles cases of 2025. The cases reflect a growing national trend, with the CDC reporting over 1,000 confirmed cases across 33 states so far this year.

Measles is highly contagious and can cause serious illness, especially in unvaccinated individuals. Health officials are urging residents to watch for symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose, red/watery eyes, and rash (usually starting on the face, hairline, and/or back of the ears).

Platte Health Center Avera is closely monitoring the situation and available to assist community members with questions, symptom concerns, or care access.

If you believe you’ve been exposed or are showing symptoms, please call 605-337-1501 before visiting our facility so we can work with you to avoid exposing other patients and visitors.

💙 June is Men's Health Month 💙—a time to prioritize the well-being of the men in our lives.

Men face unique health challenges, including higher risks for heart disease, certain cancers, and mental health issues. Men die by su***de at a rate nearly FOUR TIMES higher than women, highlighting the urgent need to prioritize mental health awareness and support

Ways to Support Men's Health:

🩺 Schedule Regular Check-Ups: Early detection can save lives.

🧠 Promote Mental Well-Being: Encourage open conversations about mental well-being. Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. If you or someone you know is struggling, call or text the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline.

🥗 Adopt Healthy Habits: Balanced diet, regular exercise, and sufficient sleep are key.

🧢Wear Blue: Show your support by wearing blue during Men's Health Week.

Let's encourage men to lead their own health journeys with confidence. For more information and resources, visit menshealthmonth.org. 🚹
