🌍 Today is World Diabetes Day--a chance to raise awareness, share knowledge, and support the millions of people living with diabetes every day. 💙

Most of us have heard of diabetes, but there are many lesser-known facts that can help us better understand the condition and support those who are affected:

🔹Diabetes isn’t just about sugar.
It affects the entire body--from blood vessels and nerves to vision, kidney function, wound healing, and even mental health.

🔹Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are very different.
Type 1 is an autoimmune disease and is not caused by diet or lifestyle. Type 2 involves how the body uses insulin, but genetics, stress, and even sleep play a role in its development, not just diet.

🔹Type 2 diabetes can develop silently for years.
Many people don’t experience noticeable symptoms early on, which is why routine screenings are so important, especially if you’re over 45 or have risk factors.

🔹Certain medications can raise blood sugar, including steroids, some blood pressure medications, and even certain antidepressants.

🔹 Not everyone with Type 2 diabetes is overweight.
Genetics, hormonal changes, age, ethnicity, and pancreatic function all play major roles.

Today, let’s take a moment to learn, support, and show kindness. 💙
If you or someone you love is living with diabetes, you’re not alone. Your strength doesn’t go unnoticed!

🎉 Trivia Winner Announcement! 🎉
Congratulations to Angie Rasmussen for correctly answering our trivia question--you’re the proud new owner of a travel mug! ☕You can stop by the main entrance at Central Registration anytime during regular hours to pick up your prize!☺️

Here was the question:
✅TRUE OR FALSE❎: Most breast cancers are caused by inherited genetic mutations passed down from a parent, such as BRCA1 or BRCA2.

ANSWER: FALSE❎

🧬Only about 5–10% of breast cancers are caused by an inherited gene mutation passed down from a parent (such as BRCA1 or BRCA2). The remaining 90–95% are either familial (cancer clusters in families without a clear gene mutation) or sporadic (occur by chance or due to non-genetic factors).

🎀 Remember--knowing your risk and keeping up with regular screenings can save lives!

So, even if breast cancer doesn’t “run in your family,” screenings are still essential. 💪 Take charge of your health! Talk with your provider about when to get your next mammogram at Platte Health Center Avera!🌸

Congratulations to Baily Groeneweg for correctly answering our trivia question--you’re this week's winner! ☕You can stop by the main entrance at Central Registration anytime during regular hours to pick up your travel mug!☺️

Here is the original question: Why can dense breasts make breast cancer harder to detect?🤔

✅Correct answer is "B. Dense breast tissue can hide tumors on a mammogram and slightly increases cancer risk."

🩻Both dense tissue and tumors appear white on a mammogram, making it harder for doctors to spot small cancers. About 40–50% of women over 40 have dense breasts, which can also slightly increase their chance of developing breast cancer. (source: bcrf.org)

👉 Know your breast density! Talk with your provider about whether 3D mammography or other screening options are right for you. Platte Health Center Avera is here for your mammography screening needs!

🎉 Trivia Winner Announcement! 🎉

Congratulations to Glenda Hiemstra for correctly answering our trivia question--you’re the proud new owner of a travel mug! ☕You can stop by the main entrance at Central Registration anytime during regular hours to pick up your travel mug!☺️

Here was the question:
✅True or False❎: Mammograms can detect cancer up to TWO YEARS before physical symptoms can be felt.

That statement is ✅ TRUE--mammography can reveal changes in breast tissue well before a lump or other symptoms are detectable.

According to the CDC, mammograms “can find cancers up to three years before they can be felt.”

Many other clinical sources likewise state that "mammograms often detect tumors or micro-changes 1–2 years (or more) before a physical exam would." (bcrf.org, charlotteradiology.com, cedars-sinai.org)

Early detection saves lives, and that’s exactly why we love combining fun education with great prizes. Congratulations again, Glenda, and thanks to everyone who participated! Stay tuned for more trivia and chances to win. 🎁
