“I don’t know if he’s going to make it.”

As her 8-month-old son, Ezekiel, sat in her lap — as happy and wiggly as any baby you’d ever see — Jennifer couldn’t believe her ears. She had brought Ezekiel to the urgent care near her home in Oshkosh because she thought his heart was beating a little fast. In fact, she felt silly being there. But now the doctor was telling her they were going to transport Ezekiel to a nearby ER by ambulance. As they waited for the ambulance, the doctor hooked Ezekiel up to an EKG to measure his heart rate. It was beating at 350 beats per minute. Normal for his age is around 100.

From the ER, Ezekiel was sent to the Herma Heart Institute at Children’s Wisconsin, where he was diagnosed with ventricular tachycardia, a rapid heartbeat caused by a malfunction in the heart’s electrical system. That was in June. Since then, Ezekiel has been back at our Cardiac Intensive Care Unit on two separate occasions for more than a month in total. Despite the rapid heartbeat, Ezekiel continues to do well — he’s active, growing and as happy as can be — while Dr. Anoop Singh, a pediatric electrophysiologist, and his team continue to try different medications to get his heart rhythm under control.

Jennifer said, “The care here, the love they show him, it’s been incredible. Nurse Erik and all the other nurses and doctors are just so caring. They love each child and it gives me comfort to know he’s in such good hands. Everybody wants answers now, everyone wants things done right away. But in this situation, I know they’re doing what they need to do. I just thank them for not giving up on him. I’m so thankful that the doctors want to make sure he’s safe and make sure they handle it the right way. We’re not in a hurry.”

Ouch! Last month, 5-year-old Sophie was playing on the monkey bars at school when she took a nasty fall. A same-day visit to her primary care doctor led to a quick referral to the Children’s Wisconsin Emergency Department for a suspected break of her left arm.

An X-ray confirmed the break and surgery was scheduled for the following day. In a procedure that took less than an hour, Dr. Benjamin Escott, one of our orthopedic surgeons, placed two pins in Sophie’s arm to stabilize the break, and later that day she was discharged with her new cast and on the road to recovery.

Mom said, “We cannot say enough good things about Children’s Wisconsin. All of the staff is amazing with both kids and parents.”
