For some families, even a simple afternoon at the movies is difficult if not downright impossible due to the special needs of one or more family members. However, for some families, even a simple afternoon at the movies is difficult—if not downright impossible—due to the special needs of one or more family members. That’s why we’re so excited to announce a special new opportunity in the area for families living with autism or other disabilities to enjoy a movie together in a safe and accepting environment. We have teamed up with State Theatres to offer Special Day at the Movies—A Sensory-Friendly Experience at the Avalon Cinema in Platteville
A sensory-friendly movie experience accommodates the unique needs of individuals with autism and others who struggle with sensory extremes by offering a movie showing in a theater with lights that are dimmed rather than darkened completely and a sound system that’s adjusted to a slightly lower volume. Perhaps even more important, Special Day at the Movies offers a chance for special families to enjoy a movie together without worrying about someone else in the theater being disturbed by added sounds or movement and complaining to the manager. During this special showing, typical movie policies will be relaxed slightly. Family members who need to get up frequently and walk, twirl, or even bounce on a therapy ball, or those who tend to hum, laugh out loud, and clap when they’re happy and excited, will be allowed to do so without fear of removal. This movie experience is not limited to families with disabilities; however, all movie-goers who attend will do so with the understanding that the climate at this showing is one of acceptance. We would appreciate your support of Special Day at the Movies. We are offering reduced ticket prices to this event as many of the families who might like to take advantage of this unique opportunity may also be burdened with excessive medical and/or therapy costs. Any contributions—whether monetary or by simply helping us spread the word—will be
greatly appreciated.
