Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, commemorates the day in 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger announced in Galveston, Texas, that all enslaved people were free. This announcement enforced the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. The significance of this date lies in its representation of the end of slavery in the United States, particularly in the last Confederate state where enforcement was delayed.
Juneteenth symbolizes freedom, resilience, and the ongoing struggle for equality. It serves as a time for reflection, education, and celebration of African American culture and achievements. Recognized as a federal holiday in the U.S. since 2021, Juneteenth promotes awareness of history and highlights the importance of social justice.
