It only takes a moment to start to heal yourself from emotionality of the NICU experience. No matter what happens with your baby, the benefits to keeping a journal for yourself can be profound. I didn't scrapbook my preemies' journey until they were about 6. I was amazed to look back at my feelings and how cathartic the experie
nce of reviewing them was, no matter when you start.

Want to know one of the most powerful weapons a super-preemie-mom has in her possession?  A journal! It's where she: lets out all her overwhelming and burdensome emotions figures out what she needs to do tracks every bit of data she needs about her baby's every single thing has all o

This came up on my facebook feed today. Just goes to show that the NICU experience is about families, not always just the babies.

As my preemies were born during the holiday season, I often take time to reflect on all the help I received during my girls' time in the NICU. Consider giving a gift of support to other preemie parents and NICU units this holiday season. Place an order using the code GIVE2015 for 30% off your order now through December 15.

NICU nurse, I don't know if you know the impact you had on our family. I don't think I thanked you. I hope it's not too late. Thank you for rocking my baby when I couldn't be with him at night. Thank you for making feel like a normal mother in the moments when I felt anything but normal.

Around 1881, Stéphane Étienne Tarnier, a french obstetrician, was the first to use an prototype incubator to care for premature babies. He believed that keeping a constant temperature, isolation, hygiene, appropriate feeding, and a warm, humid environment were necessary. He was inspired by a device used to incubate poultry,

Full gestation of a baby is generally 40 weeks. Infants born before 37 weeks are considered premature. More and more births are being scheduled a little early. Experts are learning that this can cause problems. March of Dimes gives some information as to why waiting until at least 39 weeks is best, if possible.

If you're pregnant, find out why your baby needs at least 39 weeks in your womb for healthy development. Healthy babies are worth the wait!

Do you have a moment that you remember vividly from your time in the NICU? What is it? Mine was the first day my daughters wore clothes. We left to scrub in with family who were going to see the girls for the first time. When we came back to the girls' bedside, one of the nurses had put both of our girls in lacy dresses. We had never seen them with clothes on. It was amazing!

The March of Dimes was originally established by FDR to fight polio. The mission focus was shifted to premature birth and birth defects. This was led by Dr. Virginia Apgar, widely known for the “Apgar Score,” a clinical system of evaluating the physical condition of newborns at birth. She joined the March of Dimes in 1959, eventually to become Vice President for Medical Affairs and a leading publicist for the new mission. In fact, Dr. Apgar could be hailed as the “founder” of our interest in prematurity, for it was she who first brought attention to the problems of premature birth, as early as 1960.
