Last night, two individuals attempted to siphon gasoline from our preschool bus using separate vehicles. One suspect was equipped with the necessary tools, while the other acted as a lookout. Fortunately, we caught them during the act, the bus sustained damage during the fuel extraction process. The male suspect fled on foot, abandoning his truck, while the female drove away in a different vehicle. Subsequently, the Sheriff's Department located both individuals. Regrettably, the woman was permitted to return to where she is staying on Parkway Road to retrieve and allowed to retrieve the truck associated with the theft.
This situation is both disheartening and alarming, particularly as it demonstrates her continued freedom to engage in such activities due to just being a lookout. I understand the constraints faced by the Sheriff's Department, and I wish more could have been done to prevent further damage to our property and that of others in our community. Nonetheless, I appreciate their assistance in this matter. They have recommended several preventative measures, including the installation of additional lighting around the bus at night, the use of a locking gas cap, the addition of a nearby camera, and parking the bus behind a fence.
It is important to note that we have already implemented all these measures; however, the bus continues to attract individuals who believe they are entitled to access its fuel. The damages incurred extend far beyond the cost of the stolen gasoline; they undermine the enjoyment our program provides to families. Such incidents hinder our ability to organize outings and lead to increased insurance premiums if we file claims after repeated occurrences. Therefore, if anyone recognizes these individuals, please inform them that the repercussions of their actions are far more significant than just a few gallons of gas. You are stealing adventures and joy from children in our program.
