Blog Post: Why Regulation Comes Before Communication: A Therapeutic Look at Maslow’s Hierarchy

As we often say, “A dysregulated child isn’t being difficult – they’re asking for support. When we meet their needs, we unlock their potential.”

Discover how emotional regulation forms the foundation for language and learning in children. Based on Maslow's Hierarchy, this blog explores why co-regulation is essential before communication can emerge.

✨ Before kids can learn, connect, or grow, their basic needs must be met.

Maslow’s Hierarchy reminds us: regulation comes first. Safety, connection, and trust lay the foundation for communication, learning, and independence to flourish.

When we meet a child’s needs, we’re not just helping them cope — we’re empowering them to reach their full potential. 💫

AAC Tip: Connect, Don’t Test! 🖇️

Let’s make communication fun, not frustrating!

Instead of quizzing your child with their AAC device, try connecting through play, eye contact, shared interests, and meaningful moments. 🧸

When we focus on connection over correction, we help kids see their AAC as a tool for real communication - not just another task. 🫧

AAC Tip: Presume Potential 🧠

Every child has something to say - even if they aren’t using words yet. When we presume potential, we open the door for communication, learning, and connection.

Your belief in your child’s ability to communicate makes all the difference. Keep talking, modeling, and celebrating every win - they’re all steps forward.

This is part 2 of our AAC series – more tips coming soon!💡

When it comes to AAC, modeling without expectation is everything. 🌟 Communication isn’t learned by testing—it’s learned through consistent, meaningful exposure. When we model language on a device with patience and purpose, our learners will have that “aha” moment and start to engage. ✨

It might take a few sessions, or even a year—but with consistency, it will happen. 💬 If your child has an AAC device they’re not using yet, it likely means they just haven’t seen enough modeling.

Huge shoutout to our amazing RBT and graduate student intern, Alyssa, for showing up and modeling like a pro in every session! 👏🩵
