5 step strategy to get customers and investors for your health tech startup without spending ANY money on marketing

This is Sally Ann Frank’s “proxy customer” strategy.

She has guided many successful health tech startups through her role as Global Lead of Health & Life Sciences at Microsoft for Startup.

Step 1 - Find your proxy customers

A Proxy customer = Someone who looks exactly like your target customer but isn't paying you anything because you have nothing to sell yet.

Step 2 - Make the ask (this is easier than you think)
↳ Send them a message saying something like "I'm building a solution for [specific problem]. Can I get 15 minutes of feedback?"
↳ Most clinicians say yes because they want that problem solved too
↳ They become your collaborators

Step 3 - Show them what you have & ask for feedback
↳ Create a basic product mockup on Canva or Powerpoint
↳ Ask them for honest feedback on the concept
↳ Ask them about their biggest frustrations

Step 4 - Bring them on the journey with you
↳ Give them regular updates on your progress
↳ Set up more feedback sessions as you iterate
↳ This way, they become emotionally invested in your success

Step 5 - Convert investment into everything you need.
Because they’re emotionally invested in your success they become your:

↳ First beta testers when your MVP is ready
↳ Advisors who guide product development
↳ References for future customers
↳ Potential angel investors

This way, you're building with your users from day one. All from finding proxy customers and setting up a 15-minute conversation with them.

7 hard earned lessons from Microsoft's "startup whisperer" that every health tech founder needs to hear

Sally Ann Frank has guided many successful health tech startups through her role as Global Lead of Health & Life Sciences at Microsoft for Startup.

On our latest Digital Health Disruptors podcast, she shared the unvarnished truth about what separates successful health tech ventures from those that fail:

1. Your personal pain = your competitive advantage
Many successful health tech founders she knows were driven by personal experience - a brother's cancer diagnosis, friends with breast cancer, a father needing neuro rehab.
2. Build cheap mockups before going all in
Use Figma, Canva, even PowerPoint. Validate willingness to pay BEFORE you build anything.
3. Proxy customers help you validate your idea
Find 10 people who look like your target customer. Pitch them your idea. Get them emotionally invested in your journey.
4. It’s ok to change your original idea
Multiple successful founders pivoted completely from their original idea when they spotted a better opportunity.
5. You don’t need million dollar contracts
A few people willing to pay small amounts to try your idea is enough to begin validating your solution.
6. 2025 = The year of AI agents
Aging population + staff shortages + AI employees = massive opportunity in care coordination and revenue cycle management.
7. Three questions reveal readiness to scale:
Do you have paying customers?
Are you coachable?
Did you hire the right team?
