Yesterday marked the halfway point of winter. The good news? The days are getting lighter—we’ve made it through the darkest stretch of the season. Yay! And yet, we are still very much wintering.

For some, this time may feel long. You may be yearning for warmer air, green grass, and longer days. But remember: this journey through winter is essential. This period of turning inward is necessary—for us and for nature. The ground, the plants, and the animals are still resting deeply. This is the natural way of things.

As Brigit Anna McNeill beautifully describes, “It is a time for the medicine of story, of fire, of nourishment and love… a period of reconnecting, relearning, and reclaiming what this time means—bringing winter back to a season of kindness, love, rebirth, peace, and unburdening, rather than a time of dread, fear, depression, or avoidance”.

So be gentle with yourself. Appreciate these last weeks of quiet and inward connection. Take time for self-care and for activities that often get pushed aside once the warmer seasons return:

*Take a bath with your favorite essential oils and Epsom salts

*Wrap yourself in the warmest blanket you can find—or pull out those extra-thick socks from the back of the drawer

*Write in a journal or make a homemade Valentine for someone you love

*Keep lighting the fire and burning the candles

*Try a new soup or stew recipe you’ve been wanting to make

*Bundle up and take a winter walk

*Do a puzzle or play a board game

*Finally start that 500-page book you’ve been meaning to read

*Rearrange your furniture or wall hangings

*Create a winter or February music playlist

*Join me at The Yoga Loft for my Nourish + Restore class—a perfect blend of gentle movement and deep rest.

What does connection mean to you both on and off the mat? In a world that often feels noisy and chaotic, start with connecting to yourself. Notice your breath. Is it shallow, is it rushed? Notice what you are feeling in your physical body. Where is there tightness and tension? Notice your emotions and where you are feeling them in your body. When we are more connected with ourselves, it is easier to connect with others in a more calm, genuine and present way. ☮️ ❤️

Several years ago, a teacher of mine shared a story about her 90-year-old grandmother. Each morning, this grandmother would wake up, sit at her kitchen table, take out a blank piece of paper and a box of crayons, and color her day. She would imagine what she wanted the day to look and feel like, and she would create it on that empty page.

I love this story. It’s a simple reminder that each day is a blank canvas, and we get to choose how we paint it.

Start with today. Rather than focusing on intentions for the entire year ahead, think about just this one day.

What do you want today to look like?

What do you want today to feel like?

Taking it one day at a time makes it feel a lot less overwhelming.

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season, and I wish you many beautiful days in 2026—days filled with moments of playfulness, creativity, and joy.

Tomorrow the winter solstice takes place - the start of the winter season… the shortest day of the year, the longest night. This is a time of introspection, reflection and slowing down. Light some candles, connect with nature, set intentions for the new season and find some time to be still. 🕯️ ❄️ 📝 🧘

During the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, grounding is very important…
*Feel your feet: press your feet firmly into the floor, noticing the texture, temperature and pressure.
*Use your other senses: look around your space and notice details, listen to the sounds around you or feel the chair supporting you.
*Take long, slow deep breaths; use your breath as an anchor to the present moment.

In the words of poet, David Whyte; “Gratitude is not a passive response to something we have been given. Gratitude arises from paying attention, from being awake in the presence of everything that lives within us and without us and beside us. Thanksgiving happens when our sense of presence meets all other presences. Being unappreciative might mean we are simply not paying attention.”

Tune into your inner voice. Is it a kind voice? Would you speak this way to a friend? Do you allow yourself to feel and express your emotions without judgment? What self-critical thoughts or beliefs do you hold about yourself? What would it look like to respond with kindness toward yourself opposed to self-criticism?

What would it be like if you let everything be just as it is? Without trying to change it or control it. Surrender is the willingness to feel life as it is. When we are surrendered to what is, we are fully available to be present in the living moment.

“No” vember

Here we are in the darker, colder season and just around the corner is the busy holiday season. Our bodies naturally want to slow down. When we overcommit, we burn energy that we may not have at this time of the year.

It’s a good time to start saying “no” to things that drain our energy – unnecessary commitments, social media, unhealthy relationships, negative thoughts.

Saying no to all of these exhausting things will make more space for the things that bring light, warmth and joy. Protecting our energy, time and focus will allow us to prioritize nourishing activities.

What can you say “no” to this month?

What brings you light?

If you are looking for a more restful practice, join me for “Nourish + Restore” Saturdays, November 8, 22 & 29 from 11:30am-12:30pm at The Yoga Loft.
