Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses & Allied Professionals Pennsylvania’s Fastest Growing Union of Frontline Nurses and Healthcare Professionals

Founded by nurses and for nurses, PASNAP works to set better standards for patients and health professionals alike. As members of a professional union, we have a legal right to negotiate as equals over things that impact our jobs and our ability to care for patients. We’re stronger together — and our patients receive better care because of it. That's why PASNAP is Pennsylvania's fastest growing union for healthcare professionals.

Thank you, POWER Interfaith for inviting us to stand with you at this morning’s press conference.

Healthcare workers in Philadelphia are seeing the affordability crisis up close, every day. When people can’t meet their basic needs, it affects every part of their lives — especially their health.

Bedside caregivers see it in the patients who delay care because they’re worried about the bill, and in the parents who only bring their child to the emergency room when things have already become unbearable.

POWER, an influential coalition that includes than 50 congregations in the city, released a report about affordability based on interviews with 750 city residents.

Techs at Butler Memorial Hospital have been dangerously understaffed and overworked ever since the merger with Independence Health. Now management refuses to work with staff to make sure we can provide the quality care our patients deserve. IT'S TIME for a fair contract that respects and supports techs and our patients!

Thank you to everyone who came out to the coffee stand on Monday!

PASNAP teamed up with Affordable Pennsylvania to treat the healthcare workers at Geisinger Community Medical Center to a caffeinated treat. There, they also learned about the Healthcare Bill of Rights, and filled out postcards urging federal lawmakers to restore funding for our patients and our hospitals. Because everyone has the right to timely, affordable, high-quality healthcare.

UPDATE: Since sharing her story, Maura has been forced to leave Butler Memorial Hospital due to poor management and working conditions. Without our techs, patient care suffers. This problem is only going to get worse if techs continue to be treated poorly by Independence Health.

Under Independence Health System, resource cuts have become the norm, staff are leaving faster than they can be replaced, and the pressure on those of us who remain grows by the day. Healthcare workers deserve better, and our patients deserve better.

“The hospital looks at their staff as replaceable…”

But the community knows better.

Techs at Butler Memorial Hospital are fighting for their patients, their coworkers, and the future of healthcare in their community as negotiations with Independence Health System grow more difficult.

ONE WEEK FROM TODAY, Butler Techs will hold their first informational picket to show management that healthcare workers — and the community they serve — demand better.

Come stand with the techs who care for Butler every day.

BARGAINING IN BAD FAITH: Over and over again, Butler Memorial Hospital owner Independence Health has violated labor law and undermined good-faith negotiations throughout the Butler technicians’ contract campaign, leading to a raft of Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) charges.

While the Butler techs work day in and day out, dangerously short-staffed, on behalf of the Butler patient community, Independence has worked against the very people the system relies on to provide excellent care. Hospital management has:

* Engaged in retaliation and coercive tactics, including promising raises in an attempt to discourage unionization—and then withholding annual raises after workers unionized. Also, telling workers they are not allowed to discuss their union or wages with coworkers.

* Refused to provide essential bargaining information, including membership lists, seniority data, and employee experience records needed for meaningful negotiations.

* Made unilateral changes without bargaining, such as spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on unsustainable sign-on bonuses instead of investing in retaining experienced staff.

Shame on you, Independence!
