Did You Know? Self-Adjusting is a Bad Habit!

Do you or someone you know “self-adjust”? We hear this ALL the time… “I adjusted myself, is that ok?”

The reality is: you’re NOT adjusting yourself. Even we, as chiropractors, can not adjust ourselves!

If you stretch a region of your spine in a way that causes a cavitation (the popping sound often accompanying a chiropractic adjustment), you are not performing an adjustment.

The reality is, you are mobilizing the segments above or below the area of fixation, but you’re not moving the stuck point!

Moving a joint that is subluxated takes specific force and line of drive to successfully move. In fact, a habit of causing areas in your spine to “crack” produces ligament laxity, and this leads to spinal instability. This is why 15-30 minutes later, you have the urge to “self adjust” again. It can be a vicious cycle.

If this is you, or someone you know, we would encourage you to stop this self-adjusting habit, so that your ligaments can regain their integrity and stability to hold your spine, and your adjustment!
