"It's taken me a while to write this because it's hard to properly convey just how much this surgery meant and just how Dr McCue and his team probably saved my life.
I'm a 40yo late bloomer transmasc. My mom had just gotten a double mastectomy and THAT surgeon had done such a good job I asked advice for top surgery. She suggested Dr McCue and I scheduled a consultation with him. He was straightforward, detailed about what the procedure would involve, evidence based with all his information, and asked all the right questions for what I was looking for in terms of looks and final goals. At no point did I feel looked down on or judged, only supported.
The reason for why this is a little longer is what came after. I'd been wanting to transition slowly and I'd planned to have my top surgery the next year after the testosterone had some time to do what it does. I got the ball rolling for insurance, and after a couple months gave them a call at the suggestion Karen E, part of Dr McCues team, to check if they received everything they needed. After some very strange back and forth, one of the reps let me know coverage for gender affirming care had been removed that next year. Apparently an executive order had been signed making it illegal for federal health insurance to cover gender affirming care. I asked if the surgery would still be covered if it was approved by December but done the next year. They would only repeat their policy of "We'll continue to cover gender affirming care if you've had a gender affirming surgery already." They'd also stop covering both my meds and gender specialist appointments if I didn't have this surgery before the end of the year which was now a month away. I went into a full panic and called Dr McCues office.
Karen E, was both a light and a fire that helped keep me going while insurance seemed to try everything to keep the surgery from being approved before the end of the year (They'd tell me they hadn't received paperwork when I'd just confirmed the previous day they had). Finally I got a case number the week before Christmas and approval that Monday. As soon as I got the preop scheduled, Dr McCues office hit the ground running and secured the operating room for me for the day after Christmas! Their scheduler (also named Karen) stayed late before the holiday just to secure that OR. When I got the news I was standing in a Costco shopping for Christmas and nearly passed out. I'd gone from being clinically depressed, to finding help and hope, to having that hope almost crushed, to having suddenly everything line up.
Now for the usual type of review: I had top surgery with ni**le grafts. The surgery went well. While I was still scared as hell (I have a phobia of being put under), Dr McCues calm, confident, and straightforward manner helped me be confident everything would work out. I woke up with no surprises and healed up fairly fast with very little pain. The drains were taken out the next day, which was the part I'd been dreading dealing with so I was overjoyed. The ni**le grafts were given wet healing after the sponges were removed so I didn't end up with the kinda freaky scabbing experience many do. All advice given was, and every question was met with, evidence-backed information. I had one worry where a bit of the incision looked like it was getting aggravated. I was able to send a photo and got a response from Dr McCue within minutes that it was okay to go without the tape that was causing the issue. Scarring, graft shape and texture looks ideal for top surgery and is exactly what was planned.
Every day I love myself more and I've been able to feel more like myself. I've felt so much better about jogging or working out or even just going outside. My appointments and meds are still being covered and, while the time frame had to be sped up a bit, I don't regret anything apart from not doing this sooner. I don't know what I would have done if I didn't have Dr McCue and his team fighting for me."
