For those of us in the trans-racial adoption world, this was an interesting and relevant discussion I heard this morning on MPR. It speaks to how imperative it is that we talk about racism candidly...first with ourselves, then with our children, our family, our friends. As a therapist, I would also add with our clients. If you are parenting children of color, what are you doing to further this discussion and to prepare your kids (both adopted and biological) for the issues they will confront? Even if you have not adopted, how are you talking with your kids about race, so that they can grow up to be aware of their part in the perpetuation or challenge of this social paradigm?
Racism can be one of the most difficult subjects to talk about racism with children. MPR News host Kerri Miller discussed this topic with two experts.
