“To have satisfying, close relationships with deep emotional intimacy, you need to develop these skills: listening and validating, making plans, maintaining the relationship when apart, doing nice things for others, and showing interest in someone else’s world. These are essential for any kind of relationship, not just romantic ones.

But especially in adult partnerships, making someone feel loved isn’t hard. If you neglect your partner, you neglect yourself and sabotage your life, making things harder for you. Love languages are helpful but can be misleading; ongoing effort is required to make a partner feel loved and cherished.

If you struggle with these, it’s important to understand why, as it likely prevents you from feeling truly connected to anyone—family, lover, friend, co-worker, or literally anyone.”

“The way you experienced your parents’ love sets the foundation for how you expect to be loved in adulthood.

So, if you had highly critical, shaming, or judgmental parents who never made you feel good enough, you are going to think that partners will see you the same way.

The result? You start to self-protect.

You try to work out all the issues immediately, you try to be a great partner so they will never want to leave, and you stay on high alert to any potential threats to the relationship (like their friendships or their nights out).

You do all of this without realizing these are the very things that are causing so much of the relationship stress and insecurity that you’re trying to avoid.”

“What is the hottest thing anyone has ever said to you? 💬

So much of our arousal is conditioned by visual references and external standards. When we can close our eyes and let someone’s voice guide us, we can get lost in the spontaneous responses of our psyche.

When done masterfully, dirty talking can be extremely powerful. However, if we do not have experience with it, it can feel very daunting.

Why is dirty talk so appealing?

Forbidden fruit effect. We are very drawn to things that are forbidden or taboo. Using explicit language can provoke reactions that challenge our limiting beliefs.

It’s a form of shame transgression. Engaging in dirty talk sometimes gives a sense of excitement and adventure by pushing boundaries and stepping outside of our comfort zone.

Power dynamics. Using dominant or submissive language in dirty talk can play into power dynamics within a s*xual relationship.”
