The collaboration of therapy professionals offers the best of all words for our children to develop speech, language, communication, self-help skills, gross and fine motor skills, emotional regulation, social interactions, attending, and many other skill sets that will impact their day to day functioning. Within this framework, children have access to customized treatment plans based on individual needs in the areas of, but not limited to: Speech, Receptive-Expressive Language, Communication, Social Interactions, Gross and Fine Motor Skills, Play Skills, Feeding, Classroom Readiness, Adaptive Daily Living Skills, Behavior Management, and Emotional Regulation. Speech and Language Therapy, Feeding Therapy, and Occupational Therapy are also available for any child in need of these services. Perseverating means getting “stuck” on something—like a word, topic or an action —and repeating it over and over, even when it doesn’t fit the situation anymore.

In our case,
Clients have gotten particularly attached to a stack of rainbow cups and a container of pom-poms (among other things).

In ABA, perseveration can happen with language, movements, or play. It’s not “bad,” but it can make it harder for a child to learn new skills, interact with others, or shift attention. We work on teaching flexibility and ways to move on from perseveration to help children participate more easily in conversations and activities.

Vocal imitation is when a child copies a sound, word, or short phrase that they hear from someone else.

Example: You ask “say ma-ma” and your child repeats “ma-ma”

(Em held up her fingers in order to demonstrate the amount of syllables wanted - only two)

In ABA, teaching vocal imitation is important because it’s often the first step toward developing speech and language. By practicing copying sounds and words, children learn how to use their voices to communicate.
