The Board of Directors for the Mike Justak Foundation for Parkinson’s Disease of which I reside as President and Chairman of the Board accepted and unanimously approved my motion to cease operations and dissolve the foundation with the close of its fiscal year on December 31 2024. When it began in 2007 I hoped that could something to impact the disease . I never could have imagined what the I called PDefforts of a single person could accomplish. Through the holiday light show I called PD Shimmers I was able to raise awareness of the disease not only to the thousands of cars and occupants who came to Ithaca Lane but all viewers of evening newscasts, readers improveof the Star Tribune and other various media outlets. I especially thank all my neighbors who put up with the large traffic disruption every December weekend. The show not only gave me sense of purpose but inspired countless others that you can live and succeed with Parkinson’s . The most popular sequence of the show “All on” would take the entire bank of 58,000 lights spread out over 8 adjoining homes start at 0 percent on and ramp up to 100%full on to honor each of the 58,000 Americans diagnosed with Parkinson’s the preceding year. Over the life of the foundation that would total just under one million Americans. I am thankful for the generosity of all, especially the children whose parents would lead them to the slot in the big red box to donate. It would total $225,000 when the dust settled.

Important news

Breaking news — Congress has passed The National Plan to End Parkinson’s Act! Passed unanimously by the U.S. Senate today, the bill now heads to President Biden’s desk to be signed into law. This is a historic milestone for the PD community, and we could not have done it without our grassroots advocates who sent over 70,000 messages to their members of Congress urging their support.

We’re also grateful to the 215 senators and representatives who championed this bill, especially its lead sponsors, Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) and Chris Murphy (D-CT) and Representatives Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) and Paul Tonko (D-NY). We also extend our thanks to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Representative Jennifer Wexton (D-VA).
