Therapy Tip Thursday! โœจ๐Ÿ”Ž

โœจ Wondering what words to focus on first with your little one? Start simple โ€” and start with what matters to them! ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’ฌ

We often begin with early core words like:
โžก๏ธ go, more, yes, no, up, down, mine, help, eat, drink

These words are versatile โ€” your child can use them all day long to express wants, needs, feelings, and more. Theyโ€™re like building blocks for communication ๐Ÿงฉ

But donโ€™t forget the power of functional, motivating nouns too โ€” like ball, milk, car, mama, book, lovey, swing, or puppy ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿถ

๐Ÿ’ก Choose words that your child sees, hears, and cares about in their daily routines. If they love it or need it โ€” itโ€™s a good word to target!

๐Ÿ‘‰ Focus on these first โ€” rather than numbers, colors, or letters, which will naturally come later. (Unless of course your child is super interested in these concepts, then go right ahead!)

Did your child have a first word that was a very specific interest of theirs? Iโ€™ll go first: my 15 month old daughter loves giving our dog treats and picked up โ€œteeโ€ for โ€œtreatโ€ as a first word and itโ€™s super motivating for her to say because she gets to do her favorite thing! ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿฆด

Therapy Tip Tuesday ๐Ÿ”Ž๐ŸŒŸ

OWL to spark interactions and be a detective to what your child is trying to communicate.

Observe your child
Wait for them to initiate communication
Listen to their communication attempts

When we slow down, truly observe our children, respond to their communication attempts, and become detectives, when we think โ€œwhat would they be saying if they could say itโ€ and use context clues like what theyโ€™re looking at, playing with, or interested in, youโ€™ll be amazed at what interactions and communication attempts you see ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ˜Š

With Winter here, it's time to think about indoor play and how we can keep it fun and engaging for our children (although getting outside is still super important in the cold months!). A beneficial play approach for encouraging your child's development is open-ended play. This is play that encourages use of natural materials, open-ended objects, and items that don't have just "one way" to use the toy/item. It encourages creativity, independent play, social skills, cognitive development, fine motor skills, and unlimited language opportunities. Open-ended play is a pillar in the Reggio Emilia Philosophy and Montessori preschool programs. Scroll through to see some examples and ideas to try at home with your littles!

What are your go-to open-ended play items at home? Ours include our nugget couch that we use for forts and obstacle courses, our play kitchen, and always our muffin tin with safe, small items (including snacks) that our girls find various ways to adapt! I'd love to hear how your families are playing at home.

Core Word of the Week!

A great parent coaching strategy I like to use is helping parents focus on 1 word to incorporate throughout their week. This repeated practice in motivating, functional, and daily routines helps our little ones pick up on the concept and begin to use it themselves. We think of daily routines, books, songs, and play activities where that word can be repeated many times in a motivating way.

This is an example of how the word "GO" could be included in many different ways throughout a little one's day. The more repeated practice, the faster a child will understand and then begin to use the word. It's a simple strategy that can make a big impact! ๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿšฆ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿš—๐Ÿšฆ Car play is a favorite for almost all the little boys (and girls) on my caseload. It's a great way to facilitate pretend play, increase attention span during a preferred play task, and for teaching vocabulary and core words to comment and request (verbs, nouns, adjectives, pronouns, prepositions). A great activity to build phrases/sentences and get repetitive practice with simple language concepts.

Example of vocabulary targets for above picture:
Go in, come out
Open/close the door
Drive fast/slow
Car stop! Car go!
More tiles please
Build this again
He is driving!
Knock him down!
Too big/small
Make a red house
Iโ€™m ready! Letโ€™s do it!
I want red/green/blue + tile/car
On the road
Take it off
Put it on top
Put car in
Take car out
Crash the house

PRIME DAY HAUL as a pediatric SLP! ๐Ÿ“ฆ๐Ÿš—

Some of my favorite toys went on sale and I didn't hesitate to add these to my new practice. See the slides for ways to incorporate speech and language into your child's favorite activities (or see ways you're already doing this!). Play is how children learn and grow. Simple adjustments or focuses within your play can make huge differences in your child's speech and language development.

I left the mirror out of the slides, but it is a great tool for kids learning different speech sounds and a way for them to self-correct and self-identify their errors/successes!

Magnetile road and car play will need it's own post someday ๐Ÿ‘

Shout-out to for some great boy-mom recommendations as 75% of my caseload is little boys right now.

Speech Sounds!! ๐Ÿ‘„๐Ÿ—ฃ

It can be hard to know what sounds our children should be saying correctly and which ones are still developmentally appropriate to be said incorrectly! Milestones can be a good guide on what to expect with your child. If you are concerned with how others are understanding your child, always feel free to reach out and ask if it is typical for a child their age or if they'd benefit from some extra support ๐Ÿ˜Š

FIRST WORDS! ๐Ÿซง๐Ÿผโšฝ๏ธ

First words can be a daunting milestone to work towards. What counts as a first word? Any verbal word or sign a child consistently and independently uses for the same word/action. Sound effects, signs, and word approximations count! What is a word approximation? Itโ€™s a simplified version of the adult word (Think buh-buh to represent the word bottle).

If you are curious about your childโ€™s development of words and are interested in learning some strategies to support their development, contact Little Speech Pals! Iโ€™m happy to answer any questions and see if your child would benefit from a speech and language evaluation.

About the Owner and SLP, Mackenzie Williams!

Hello! I wanted to put a face to a name on here. A little about myself:

I have been a pediatric SLP for 6 years in clinical and public school settings. I graduated with my Bachelors degree from Western Michigan University (go broncos!) and my Masters degree from Northwestern University (go cats!). My specialties and clinical focuses include early intervention, late talkers, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), Autism Spectrum Disorder, and speech sound disorders.

I am passionate about treating the whole child and supporting parents in developing their childโ€™s speech and language skills. I believe that in order to make progress, a child must feel connected, valued, and empowered to be exactly who they were created to be. My goal is to always build trusting relationships with clients and their families.

My family is my โ€œwhyโ€. My husband Matt and I have two beautiful daughters and a chocolate lab. I enjoy being outdoors, reading a good fiction novel, and going for a walk or run. If Iโ€™m watching a movie, itโ€™s likely to be Harry Potter.

Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns about your child's speech and language development.
