School’s Back—And So Is the Need to Stay Healthy!

As we head into a new school year, it’s the perfect time to talk about how kids can take care of themselves—and how to recognize when something might be wrong.

One important thing to know? The signs of a stroke.
While strokes are more common in adults, they can happen at any age—even in children. Knowing what to look for can save a life. Remember BE FAST:

🔹 Balance- Feeling wobbly or dizzy?
🔹 Eyes- Is the vision blurry or are they seeing double?
🔹 Face drooping – Is one side of the face uneven or are they not smiling right?
🔹 Arm weakness – Is one arm weaker or can't be lifted?
🔹 Speech difficulty – Is speech slurred, strange, or hard to understand?
🔹 Time to call 911 – Act fast—every second counts!

And for everyday health:
✅ Eat healthy snacks and drink plenty of water.
✅ Wash your hands often.
✅ Brush your teeth twice a day for a healthy smile.
✅ Get plenty of sleep.
✅ Be active—play, run, move!

Let’s make this school year safe, healthy, and full of learning—both in the classroom and about our health.

A Lifelong Connection: Brin Presley’s Journey in Healthcare

For Brin Presley, healthcare isn’t just a career — it’s part of her story. Growing up with a mother who was a nurse, Brin always felt drawn to helping others. She began her college journey majoring in nursing, but along the way, discovered her true calling in sonography.

“Treat every patient as though they are family,” Brin says — a philosophy she carries into every scan she performs. Her dedication comes from knowing that the images she captures can provide answers that lead to life-changing care. “Helping patients get a quick diagnosis so they can begin treatment as soon as possible is the most rewarding part of my job.”

Brin’s connection to Five Rivers is deeply personal. She was born at this very hospital, and years later, as a college student facing a serious illness, she underwent an ultrasound — an experience that sparked her interest in sonography. After graduation, she returned to Five Rivers to begin her career and has never looked back.

“This is my home and these are my people,” Brin says. “Looking back, I can see how God directed my path to sonography and placed me here at Five Rivers. This is truly where my life began.”

For those just beginning their own healthcare journey, Brin offers heartfelt advice: “It is hard work, but the reward is so much better than you can imagine. Truly making a difference in the lives of our patients is such a blessing.”

Brin Presley’s story is one of full-circle moments, faith, and compassion in action — and she continues to make a lasting impact on the patients and team she serves every day.

A Stroke Awareness Story for Families & Kids

Sometimes, something as simple as a crooked smile can be a powerful warning sign.

Our new campaign, "Grandpa’s Crooked Smile," is here to help children and families recognize the early signs of a stroke—and understand that acting F.A.S.T. can save lives.

Through storytelling, education, and kid-friendly resources, we’ll teach the next generation how to:
✔️ Spot the signs
✔️ Speak up
✔️ Be a hero in an emergency

Kids notice more than we think. With the right knowledge, they can make a life-saving difference.

Compassion in Action: Honoring Amber Webb

We are proud to recognize Amber Webb as the latest recipient of our "Compassion in Action" spotlight — a tribute to those in healthcare who go above and beyond to serve others with heart, patience, and purpose.

For Amber, the motivation to work in healthcare has always been simple: "To help people, of course." It’s a calling rooted in empathy and a deep desire to make a difference in the lives of others — not just clinically, but emotionally and practically as well.

Amber’s role often places her at the intersection of patients and the complexities of billing and insurance — a space that can easily become a source of confusion or stress. Yet for Amber, it’s exactly where she finds the most meaning.

"I always hope that when I interact with patients or families, they feel relieved. Most of the people that come in to see us have worries and concerns about one thing or another. If I can do something to help with that worry, I'm happy."

It’s clear that Amber truly loves what she does — and that passion makes all the difference. “When you love your job, showing up every day isn’t hard” she shares. Her positive attitude and dedication uplift everyone around her.

When asked what “Compassion in Action” means to her, Amber doesn’t hesitate. "It means treating someone how I would want to be treated," she says — a simple, powerful reminder of the golden rule that guides her approach every single day.

Healthcare is not without its challenges, and staying compassionate during difficult moments takes strength and intention. For Amber, her faith and mindfulness keep her centered.

"I take deep breaths and remind myself of the phrase, ‘What would Jesus do?’." It helps her respond with grace, even on the hard days.

Amber Webb’s quiet commitment to care, her everyday empathy, and her unwavering dedication to patients make her a shining example of "Compassion in Action". We are honored to celebrate her and grateful for the light she brings to our team.

As much as we’ve enjoyed the summer, it’s time to start getting ready to head back to school!

One of the most important things for kids (and parents!) as the school year approaches is resetting sleep schedules. A well-rested child is more focused, healthier, and ready to take on the challenges of a new school year.

Here are some tips to help your family ease back into a healthy sleep routine:

1️⃣ Start Gradually: Begin shifting bedtime earlier by 10–15 minutes each night so that the transition is smoother.

2️⃣ Establish a Calming Pre-Bedtime Routine: Encourage quiet activities like reading or stretching to help your child relax before bed.

3️⃣ Limit Screen Time: Try to avoid screens at least an hour before bedtime to promote better sleep quality.

4️⃣ Stick to Consistent Wake-Up Times: Even on weekends, waking up at the same time helps regulate the body’s natural sleep cycle.

5️⃣ Create a Comfortable Sleep Environment: Make sure your child's bedroom is quiet, cool, and comfortable for restful sleep.

A good night’s sleep helps boost focus, mood, and overall health—everything your child needs for a successful school year!

As we at St. Bernard’s Five Rivers wish everyone a wonderful new school year, let’s make sure that sleep is at the top of the list for health and success!
