Today, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness will never be forgotten.

This Memorial Day, all of us at St. Bernards Five Rivers Medical Center extend our gratitude to the heroes who gave their lives in service to our nation and to the families who carry their legacy forward each day.

May we reflect on the freedoms we enjoy because of their sacrifice and honor their memory with gratitude and respect.

During Hospital Week last week, St. Bernards Five Rivers proudly celebrated our Service Award recipients and our “Living the Mission” honorees.

This year’s service award recipients represent more than 400 years of combined service to our patients, community, and organization — an incredible reflection of dedication, compassion, and commitment to healthcare excellence.

We also want to congratulate our “Living the Mission” recipients for exemplifying the values and mission of St. Bernards through the care and kindness they show every day.

Thank you to each and every team member for the difference you make in the lives of our patients and families. We are proud to celebrate you and the impact you have on our community each day!

Compassion in Action: Family, Faith, and Patient Care

At St. Bernards Five Rivers, compassion is more than a value—it is something our team lives out every day. We are proud to recognize Callie Ham, RN, for the care, kindness, and dedication she brings to every patient interaction.

Callie says her inspiration for entering healthcare came from a desire to help people during some of life’s hardest moments. “I wanted to go into nursing to be able to meet people in their time of need and do what I can to help make it a little better. I enjoy caring for people and I wanted to do something that would make a lasting difference.”

For Callie, the most meaningful moments often come through simple acts of presence and compassion. She recalls caring for a patient who was overwhelmed with fear and anxiety. “Just having someone to listen to her and give her the attention she needed calmed her nerves and allowed her body to rest and heal. When I see this peace and calmness, that’s why I do this.”

Even on difficult days, Callie keeps her focus where it belongs—on the patient. “Many times it is situational and not personal. Chances are, the patient is having a much more difficult time than I am. I always do what I can to keep my patients comfortable, ease their discomfort and pain, and listen without judging.”

Her hope is that every patient and family member leaves feeling truly cared for. “I hope patients and families feel seen and heard and know their care is prioritized and individualized. I always try to make them feel like they are my only patient because while I am with them at that moment, they are.”

With more than 11 years of nursing experience and the last 2½ years spent at Five Rivers, Callie values the strength of rural healthcare teamwork. “We have a great team at Five Rivers. Being a rural hospital, St. Bernards Five Rivers relies on teamwork, but that’s what makes us so strong. Our team works well together!”

When asked what legacy she hopes to leave, Callie shared a verse that guides her life: “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven.” – Matthew 5:16 She adds, “It is my hope that my actions—how I treat others and how I carry myself—will ultimately point others to Jesus.”

And her favorite part of working at Five Rivers? “I love the small-town ‘family’ feel of working at Five Rivers. Coworkers aren’t just coworkers—they become family.”

Thank you, Callie, for showing us what Compassion in Action truly looks like. Your kindness, servant heart, and commitment make a lasting difference in the lives of so many.
