Every Patient Like Family: Celebrating Lexie Shelton

For Lexie Shelton, healthcare is more than a career—it’s a calling deeply rooted in family. Inspired by her mother, who dedicated her own life to the profession, Lexie grew up listening to stories of compassion, commitment, and the rewards of caring for others. “I was inspired to work in healthcare by my mom,” she shares. “I always loved listening to her work stories and how much she loved what she chose as a career.”

That influence shaped not only her career path but also her personal philosophy of care. For Lexie, compassion in action means treating every patient as if they were her own family. “It is having the willingness to always listen without judgment, and offering each patient the care and respect they need in every situation,” she explains.

Her hope for each interaction is simple yet profound: that patients and families walk away feeling valued. “I hope everyone I see daily feels seen, heard, and genuinely cared for,” Lexie says. “You never know what people are going through, so when they leave, my goal is to make them feel more at ease and respected.”

Lexie is quick to point out that the heart of healthcare isn’t found in one individual but in the team. “Healthcare really is a team effort and everyone I work beside daily truly cares about providing the best care for every patient,” she notes. That teamwork, combined with a shared sense of purpose, is what makes Five Rivers Medical Center such a special place for her. “Everyone at FRMC actually cares about each patient. They are always willing to work together and make people feel welcome to work there whether they have been there a week or 10 years.”

For those just beginning their healthcare journey, Lexie offers heartfelt advice: “Always be willing to learn, don’t doubt yourself, and always remember your work is directly impacting patients’ lives in some way.”

Lexie’s dedication reflects the very spirit of Compassion in Action—leading with empathy, listening with an open heart, and striving every day to make a difference.

Family, Empathy, and Healing: The Heart of Brooke Pinkus’ Work

For Brooke Pinkus, her journey into healthcare began with an opportunity that changed her perspective forever. Early in her career, she worked for a company that developed life-saving medications—an experience that opened her eyes to the real-world impact of quality care. “I was lucky enough to travel and meet children who were recipients of the medicine,” Brooke recalls. “They showed so much resilience in the face of unimaginable challenges and still smiled through it. It made me realize just how critical good healthcare is—not just for patients, but for their families too.”

Her passion for healthcare became deeply personal when her own family faced a crisis. “A few years ago, we had a scare with my dad. By the time we arrived at Five Rivers Medical Center, he had slipped into a coma. My coworkers immediately sprang into action and surrounded us with compassion—not just for my dad, but for all of us,” she says. “He’s the backbone of our family, and had they not done everything they could, we might have lost him. That moment cemented why I chose this field.”

To Brooke, compassion in healthcare isn’t just a soft skill—it’s the foundation. “Compassion means being present, patient, and empathetic, especially when people are vulnerable,” she explains. “It’s recognizing what someone is going through, and responding in a way that makes them feel seen, supported, and heard. That kind of empathy is essential in this line of work.”

She also hopes to inspire others—starting at home. “I want to set an example for my son—not just to be kind, but to actively practice compassion and encourage others to do the same,” she shares.

When asked what she loves most about working at Five Rivers, Brooke smiles. “The people. Most of them have been here a long time. It really feels like a family. There’s always someone to turn to.”

Through her work, Brooke Pinkus exemplifies what it means to lead with heart—supporting patients, uplifting colleagues, and creating a legacy of care rooted in empathy and family.
