Quiet Impact: Compassion in Action Through Pharmacy Leadership-Mike McKinney

For Mike McKinney, compassion is not a separate concept from healthcare—it is the foundation. As Pharmacy Director, Mike brings together faith, science, and service to ensure patients receive safe, effective, and thoughtful care, often in ways that are never seen but always felt.

Mike’s journey into healthcare was guided by a strong desire to serve others with Christlike compassion. Coupled with a natural love for science and mathematics, pharmacy became the ideal path—one where technical expertise and human connection intersect daily. That blend continues to shape how Mike approaches both leadership and patient care.

While there isn’t one defining moment that stands out as “this is why I do this,” Mike finds meaning in the many small moments that make up each day. From helping providers navigate therapeutic choices to counseling patients on how to safely and effectively use their medications, these interactions—large and small—are constant reminders of the impact pharmacists have at every level of care. Each moment represents an opportunity to help, to guide, and to support.

To Mike, compassion in action means seeing beyond the diagnosis. It’s about recognizing the person behind the ailment and allowing empathy and understanding to guide decisions, conversations, and care. This perspective ensures that clinical excellence is always paired with genuine concern for the individual.

Much of what the pharmacy team does happens quietly behind the scenes. Mike notes that a significant part of the pharmacist’s day is spent preventing problems no one will ever know existed. Managing medication safety, navigating supply shortages, and maintaining fiscal accountability are essential responsibilities that help keep both the pharmacy and the hospital running smoothly. When these systems work well, patients benefit—even if they never see the effort involved.

Working in a smaller hospital environment has also shaped Mike personally and professionally. Limited budgets and staffing present challenges, but they also bring valuable perspective. These constraints reinforce the understanding that while circumstances may vary, the larger mission remains the same: providing the best possible care to the community.

Mike is quick to credit the strength of the entire hospital team. Every department brings unique skills and expertise, and by working in lockstep, the team maximizes its collective impact. This collaboration ensures that patients receive comprehensive, high-quality care close to home.

Ultimately, the most rewarding part of Mike’s role is building relationships—bringing people together to solve problems, improve processes, and enhance the quality of life for patients and the community. Through leadership, collaboration, and quiet dedication, Mike McKinney exemplifies what compassion in action truly looks like.

Compassion Begins at the Front Door: Michelle Brosig in Action

Compassion often begins before a patient ever sees a clinician. For Michelle Brosig, Patient Access Supervisor at St. Bernards Five Rivers, compassion in action means ensuring every patient and family feels welcomed, respected, and understood from the very first interaction.

Michelle’s journey into healthcare began with what she describes as a calling. “I have always just had a calling for healthcare,” she shares. That sense of purpose continues to guide her work and her leadership, shaping how she supports both patients and her team each day.

For Michelle, one of the most important outcomes of any patient interaction is connection. “I hope that they feel heard and understood,” she says. Whether assisting with registration, answering questions, or navigating concerns, she believes listening is at the heart of compassionate care.

The most rewarding part of her role is the people she serves alongside. “My team and patients,” Michelle explains. “I have had the privilege of working with some amazing people.” She takes pride in her team’s dedication and in fostering an environment where collaboration and kindness are just as important as accuracy and efficiency.

Working at St. Bernards Five Rivers has also helped Michelle grow personally and professionally. “It has allowed me to grow as a person and a team player,” she says. That growth is reflected in her leadership style and her commitment to supporting those around her.

If Michelle could share one message with the community, it would be this: “We work for our patients. We work long before and after your visit to make sure you get the best care and experience.” Much of Patient Access work happens behind the scenes, but its impact is felt throughout the patient’s entire healthcare journey.

When asked what she values most about working at Five Rivers, Michelle points to the strong sense of support. “The support that comes from leadership and coworkers,” she says, is what makes the work meaningful and sustainable.

Through her dedication, empathy, and teamwork, Michelle Brosig exemplifies compassion in action—creating positive experiences for patients and families and setting the tone for care that truly begins at the front door.
