PRESS RELEASE: Center Street Underpass to Close for Construction

Work on the Center Street Underpass in Historic Downtown Pocatello is set to begin February 20, 2024. Vehicles will not be allowed to use the underpass during construction. Crews will work to accommodate pedestrian travel but might have to halt foot travel during certain segments of the project.

Crews will be replacing the retaining walls on the east and west sides of the underpass, sidewalks, and handrails. A stormwater mechanical building and a pedestrian bridge to cross West Center Street will be added during construction.

Drivers are advised to use Benton Street and Gould Street as alternative routes into downtown for the next six months. This project is anticipated to be completed by the end of August 2024, but due to unforeseen circumstances, the work scheduled may change.

The closure will begin with a water line replacement project, replacing a 12-inch cast iron pipe installed in 1934.

Congressman Mike Simpson assisted the City of Pocatello in obtaining appropriation of $5.7 million to update the Center Street Underpass. $2.1 million additional funding came from the Surface Transportation Block Grant Urban through the Metropolitan Planning Organization and the Idaho Transportation Department. The City of Pocatello’s portion is 7.34% or $572,520.00 of the total project.

Residents with questions or comments can contact the City’s Engineering Department, at 208-234-6225.

PRESS RELEASE: Trash Collection Delayed Due to Christmas, New Year’s; Holiday Garbage Pickups Begin Dec. 26

One of the City Sanitation Department’s busiest times of the year is almost here. City offices will be closed Monday, December 25 in observance of the Christmas holiday and January 1 to observe the New Year’s Day Holiday. Garbage and recycling pickups will be delayed by one day during those weeks.

From December 25 through January 6, residents are asked to place their autocarts out for collection by 7 a.m. the day after their normal collection day.
• Monday pick-ups are asked to place their autocarts out Tuesday (12/26)
• Tuesday collection will happen Wednesday (12/27)
• Wednesday will occur Thursday (12/28)
• Thursday will be Friday (12/29)
• Friday will be collected Saturday (12/30)

From December 26 through December 30, the department will offer its special holiday pickup to accommodate the overflow that comes with the season. Residents are asked to place their extra bags and boxes in the same location as their regular garbage collection. Citizens are being reminded not to place their Christmas Trees out with the extra trash.

From December 26 through January 10, the City will host its Christmas Tree Collection sites. The City will be providing drop boxes for tree disposal. The tree boxes will be removed the morning of January 11.

Christmas tree drop boxes will be provided at City Hall-911 N. 7th Ave., Rainey Park-900 South Arthur Ave., and near the entrance to Sister City Park on Pocatello Creek Road. Trees will be chipped and used in landscaping projects. Be sure to remove all strings, wires, and other objects to avoid damaging the City’s wood-chipping equipment.

If you have any questions about the collection schedule, holiday garbage pickups, or the Christmas tree collection program please contact the Sanitation Department at 208-234-6192.
