Reviving Lebanon’s Aromatic Heritage: Stories of Tradition, Transmission and Innovation
with Dr. Nicole BouKhalil

"Nicole BouKhalil is a Doctor of Pharmacy, Clinical Aromatherapist, and holder of a Master’s in Public Health. She studied Phytotherapy, Aromatherapy and Medicinal Plants in France and has completed extensive training in medical and clinical aromatherapy, with specializations in Cancer-care and end-of-life support across France, the UK and the USA.
A pioneer in introducing aromatherapy practice to Lebanon, Dr Boukhalil implemented clinical aromatherapy services for the first time in a hospital setting in Beirut. She also initiated the first aromatherapy classes for the general public.
Dr. BouKhalil is committed to promoting aromatherapy in Lebanon. She trains nurses, doctors, and other healthcare professionals in clinical aromatherapy. She also continues to teach, give lectures, and conduct workshops for the general public.
Nicole deeply believes in the holistic approach to reach optimal health care and well-being. She currently provides consultations in a multidisciplinary clinic in Beirut, as part of the clinic’s integrative approach for the patients.
In her pharmacy, Dr Boukhalil offers personalized aromatherapy blends tailored to her patients’ needs, alongside guidance on natural and plant-derived products.
Nicole’s passion for essential oils led her to become involved with local communities in preserving and promoting Lebanon’s biggest treasure: native medicinal and aromatic plants. Nicole aims to promote Lebanese essential oils and actively support small-scale artisan distillers, to sustain their work- especially in the current challenging environment the country is going through.
An international speaker, Dr. BouKhalil has presented at notable events, including Botanica 2022, the International Symposium on Aromatherapy & Essential Oils (Brazil, April 2024), Botanica Congress (May 2024), AromaSummit (June 2024), and Phyt’Arom Congress (Grasse, France, September 2024).
Nicole is the NAHA Director for Lebanon and serves on the IFPA (UK) Board of Trustees. She is the Airmid Institute Ambassador to Lebanon."

In partnership with Nutraceuticals Research Institute (formerly Franklin Health): A double blinded, placebo-controlled, randomized (1:1) parallel clinical trial conducted among otherwise healthy male and female children who were experiencing respiratory symptoms. The study compared inhalation of an essential oil blend from an inhaler stick containing eucalyptus, peppermint, lavender, and tangerine essential oils to an identical, inert placebo.

Functional Botanical Perfumery: Past, Present, and Future
with Sharon Falsetto Chapman

"Take a journey with me through the mists of time and unearth how ancient civilizations both used and made aromatic fragrances. Discover how that has transcended to the modern-day use of botanicals in aromatherapy and natural perfumery. Yes, botanical perfumery can be both functional and artistic!

In this presentation, we will look at how to create a simple fragrance, discuss different perfume notes, and how this process leads into an intricate, yet still functional, way of making scents. Want to learn beyond a basic aromatherapy oil roll-on? You’re in the right place!

We’ll look at the concerns over sustainability in the botanical fragrance industry and how you can both substitute some extracts with others, as well as extend the notes within your fragrance. Learn how your choice of base affects the overall composition of your perfume. And I’ll also be sharing some sustainability tips that you can use with your perfumery packaging.
Fragrances weave stories through their scent and composition – but they can also be functional. What do you want your scent story to be?"

08/29/2025

Tea tree oil, derived from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia plant (native to Australia), has been used for centuries due to its natural antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. Some of the health benefits of tea tree oil:

- Antibacterial
Tea tree oil has been shown to be effective against a range of bacteria, including:
Staphylococcus aureus (including some MRSA strains), Propionibacterium acnes (acne-causing bacteria), E. coli and Streptococcus species

- Antifungal
Treats athlete's foot, nail fungus, and ringworm.

- Antiviral
Antiviral activity, especially against certain enveloped viruses.

- Natural Remedy for head lice and insect bites
Tea tree oil contains ter-pinen-4-ol, which has been shown to be toxic to lice.
It may help prevent re-infestation. Its anti-inflammatory properties can reduce itching and irritation caused by lice and other insect bites.

- Skin Cancer Treatment
Laboratory studies (cell cultures and animal models) have shown that components of tea tree oil, particularly terpinen-4-ol, may have anti-tumor activity, such as slowing the growth of cancer cells.

Research sponsored by NAHA:
NAHA was proud to collaborate with Franklin Health (now Nutraceuticals Research Institute) to conduct a study which confirmed that lavender and tea tree oils are unrelated to endocrine disruption and are safe to use in children’s products. “This study was the first and only to scientifically evaluate these claims, and included over 550 children” (Franklin).
