The Quest for Change: Getting from Point A to Point B

Are you truly living according to your values? Are you abiding by what you hold to be true to the deepest core of your being?

Tim Galway asserts that our performance is the net sum of our potential to perform minus interference. If you find his conceptualization useful, ask yourself: How do I want to be different? What is my potential? What might be interfering with my ability to realize my potential?

There are so many different layers to questions like these. As I see it, many internal and external forces are at play. Some forces are even partially or wholly separate from our conscious awareness. Unconscious forces can include what lies outside our attention span, such as elements of our situation, unacknowledged desires, core beliefs, forgotten memories, unprocessed emotions, ambivalence, and so on. All is not lost, however.

Self-awareness and self-reflection are readily accessible ways to uncover what might impede our performance. Discussing our situation with friends or colleagues might also clarify the obstacles. Journaling can be helpful. So can meditation. It might even help to get out of town for a while. However, working with a coach is one of the fastest, most effective, and the most comprehensive ways to "cut to the chase" and work through issues concerning performance and interference.

A good coach starts with creating the right kind of focus for change. Then, through powerful questions and reflective statements, the coach brings, for example, what is present outside conscious awareness to the foreground. With expanded awareness arises the insight needed to resolve interference and move towards transformative change.

If you or someone you know finds that time is "of the essence" to honor a deep desire for change, consider the following opportunity as something rarely available: I am offering quality coaching at a nominal fee because I am applying my coaching hours towards certification through the International Coaching Federation. Am happy to discuss my offer with anyone considering it. Just contact me at terrykerler@gmail.com or PM me on Messenger.

Why Change Can be Difficult

Like many people, you are probably aware of how you want to change personally or professionally. You might have even researched how to take steps towards change. Now, despite all that knowledge, you find that changing can still be really difficult. What do you suppose is going on?

One way of looking at this challenge is through a formula articulated by Tim Galwey, stating that your ultimate level of performance is the result of your potential to perform minus interference.

The word interference in this formula refers to anything getting in the way of change. Interference can take on the form of unconscious or subconsciously held thoughts, beliefs, and memories. Inner conflict can also interfere with performance and change. So can personally held values left unacknowledged. In the context of relationships, change can also be impeded by personal blind spots. The Johari Window is one way to describe the difference between our self-awareness and how other people experience us (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johari_window).

Good coaching involves the use of powerful questions and reflective statements to improve awareness of what is interfering with personal or professional change. With awareness comes clarity, insight, action, and (ultimately) change. A good coach is not a consultant telling you what to do to change. Rather, a good coach helps you find the answers within.

If you know of anyone who might be interested in coaching, please pass my name along. I am currently offering coaching at a vastly reduced fee because I am working towards a professional coaching certification. For anyone interested, I can be contacted at terrykerler@gmail.com.
