✨ What the FRAT?! ✨
The Folate Receptor Antibody Test (FRAT) looks for antibodies that block folate from reaching the brain and cells — even when blood folate levels look “normal.”
Why it matters:
🔹 Cerebral Folate Deficiency → linked to seizures, developmental delay, autism spectrum features, irritability, and more.
🔹 Neurodevelopment → folate is essential for neurotransmitter balance, myelination, learning, and speech.
🔹 Pregnancy & Fertility → antibodies can reduce folate delivery to the fetus, increasing risk of neural tube defects or pregnancy loss.
💊 When FRAT is positive, folinic acid (leucovorin) may bypass the blocked receptor and restore folate to the brain.
👉 Because folate impacts brain development, mood, cognition, and overall resilience, it’s critical to work with a one of our providers who recognizes and understands how to interpret this test and tailor treatment for you or your child.
