Lots of news about delta variant and how it is more contagious. Here is the UK government’s most recent update on all variants of concern in the UK, which is nicely organized. To cut and paste a few highlights: Under age 50 larger # of Delta cases were in the population without shots which is in line with what I have heard in the news. Over age 50, the larger # of Delta cases were in the population which received both shots. That was an interesting finding, counterintuitive to what the media has reported. And Conversely the death rate for those under 50 for delta was 71 out of 265,749 positive cases which on the chart shows as 0% which of course is due to rounding because those two numbers divided is 0.000267169396686. The group over 50 years of age was 670 deaths out of 33,736 cases or 2%. So the questions might be why are those who received their two shots and over the age of 50 showing up as more likely (21,472) than the no shots (3,440) to have Delta? And if the death rate is higher in the over 50 group, 2% (vs 0% in the under 50), then what is the benefit to give the older group the shot if a greater number of them (21,472) were infected with it than the group that didn’t get the shot (3,440)? The website was updated as of august 6, 2021. As new data emerge they will update the site and perhaps shed more light on this interesting topic.
