Karṇa pūraṇa is often described as a treatment for the ears, but its reach goes well beyond hearing alone. When we understand both the Āyurvedic and physiological perspectives, the benefits make a lot of sense.
This practice may be supportive if you experience:
• ringing in the ears or ear sensitivity
• dryness or discomfort in the ears
• jaw, temple, or head tension
• migraines or stress headaches
• neck and shoulder tension
• dizziness or a sense of ungroundedness
• sensory overload or nervous system dysregulation
• difficulty settling, especially before sleep
From an Āyurvedic lens, this is about pacifying vāta - calming excess movement in the head and nervous system.
From a Western lens, warm oil in the ear gently stimulates branches of the vagus, trigeminal, and facial nerves, helping shift the system out of vigilance and into rest.
The warmth, pressure, and temporary quieting of sound can soften jaw tension, support a shift from vigilance into rest-and-digest states, and bring a surprising sense of steadiness and calm.
When to avoid this practice:
• active ear infection
• discharge from the ear
• perforated eardrum
• ear tubes or recent ear surgery
• sharp or unexplained ear pain
• significant, impacted wax
Next post: I’ll share how to practice this safely and simply at home (one of my favorite home practices).
