Karṇa pūraṇa is often described as a treatment for the ears, but its reach goes well beyond hearing alone. When we understand both the Āyurvedic and physiological perspectives, the benefits make a lot of sense.

This practice may be supportive if you experience:
• ringing in the ears or ear sensitivity
• dryness or discomfort in the ears
• jaw, temple, or head tension
• migraines or stress headaches
• neck and shoulder tension
• dizziness or a sense of ungroundedness
• sensory overload or nervous system dysregulation
• difficulty settling, especially before sleep

From an Āyurvedic lens, this is about pacifying vāta - calming excess movement in the head and nervous system.
From a Western lens, warm oil in the ear gently stimulates branches of the vagus, trigeminal, and facial nerves, helping shift the system out of vigilance and into rest.

The warmth, pressure, and temporary quieting of sound can soften jaw tension, support a shift from vigilance into rest-and-digest states, and bring a surprising sense of steadiness and calm.

When to avoid this practice:
• active ear infection
• discharge from the ear
• perforated eardrum
• ear tubes or recent ear surgery
• sharp or unexplained ear pain
• significant, impacted wax

Next post: I’ll share how to practice this safely and simply at home (one of my favorite home practices).

A Season for Repose: Conscious Rest & the Many Faces of Grief -

December often arrives carrying two seemingly opposite energies: outward fullness and inner depletion. Calendars crowd with obligations, gatherings, and expectations, even as the body quietly asks for slowing, warmth, and rest. This tension has been especially present for me this season, and it’s ...

Part Two — What Actually Happens During Karṇa Pūraṇa

Here’s a glimpse into the treatment itself.
Warm, herbalized oil is gently poured into the ear canal while the person rests on their side. The warmth deeply relaxes the tissues around the ear, jaw, and vagus nerve pathways. The oil creates a sense of quiet inside the head, almost like entering a soft inner cocoon.

Many people describe a wave of grounding spreading through their whole system - tension melting through the jaw or neck, a softening around the temples, and a release from sensory overwhelm. There is often this moment when they suddenly exhale, and their entire body softens.

Karṇa pūraṇa is simple, but its effects reach far into the nervous system.
It’s a small ritual of presence, care, and nourishment.

I’ll be sharing more soon about why this works, who can benefit, and how to integrate this practice into daily life.

If you want to learn how to safely practice karṇa pūraṇa at home, I’m sharing a more in-depth guide and reflection in my upcoming newsletter. You can sign up through the link in my bio.

Karṇa Pūraṇa — Āyurvedic Ear Oiling to Soothe the Nervous System

Warm oil in the ears is one of Āyurveda’s simplest and most grounding therapies.
It nourishes the nervous system, calms the mind, and brings a sense of quiet to places inside us that are usually overstimulated by life.

For so many of us, the world feels loud — externally and internally.
Karṇa pūraṇa is a way of offering the body a moment of warmth, containment, and stillness.
It softens tension in the jaw and neck, eases sensory overload, supports sleep, and helps restore a felt sense of safety.

This practice has supported me in profound ways, and I’m sharing this series from a place of service and love — in hopes that it may support you too.

In this series, I’ll be exploring many of the traditional therapies that shape my Āyurvedic practice — treatments that calm the nervous system, restore balance, and reconnect you with the deeper rhythms of your body.

Some of the therapies I’ll be sharing include:

Karṇa Pūraṇa

Abhyaṅga

Svedana

Śirodhara

Nasya

Marma (Marma Point Therapy)

Garṣaṇa

Udvartana

Netra Basti

Kati Basti, Jānu Basti
…and more.

Each therapy carries its own intelligence, its own way of softening what’s been held, and its own doorway into presence.

I’m looking forward to offering these with you, one by one.

Over the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing the traditional Āyurvedic therapies I offer in my practice—ancient treatments that work gently, deeply, and in harmony with the body’s own intelligence.

Each therapy is an invitation into greater presence, attunement, and balance.
A soft return to yourself.

I’m honored to share this lineage with you.

Before I share each treatment in this series, I want to name the most essential element running through all of them: presence. It’s the foundation of everything I offer. Technique and knowledge matter deeply, but the most transformative aspect is always the quality of presence we bring.

I learned this not through instruction, but by feeling it firsthand. I’ve been fortunate to sit with teachers whose attention, openness, and tenderness were unmistakable. In their presence, I felt completely seen, heard, safe, and loved. Decades later, it’s not just their wisdom I remember—it’s the imprint of their embodied presence. That is what has stayed with me.

In my own work, presence expresses itself in a thousand quiet ways: the softness of the light, the warmth of the room, the carefully chosen oils, the fluidity of each stroke, the precise pressure of a hand meeting the body, the vanilla in the water, the small treat afterward. Layers of intentionality that communicate care without a single word.

Think of someone who truly looks at you when you speak. Someone who listens with their whole self. Someone whose touch carries awareness and consideration. We all know how deeply nourishing it feels when someone is fully present with us.

That nourishment — that feeling of being known and safe — is the thread woven through every treatment I give.

It is the quiet force beneath it all.

For over 24 years, I’ve lived much of my life in a treatment room — offering thousands of sessions, immersed in mantra, silence, and the timeless wisdom of Āyurveda, yoga, ta**ra, and sacred sound.

These traditions continue to astonish me. They have brought me across the world, studying with teachers and practitioners who shaped my path and continue to inspire my offerings.

I’m still in awe of the way these treatments work: the gentleness, the precision, the intelligence of the body’s response. I’ve watched so many clients and students marvel at their effects — and I continue to marvel right alongside them.

Over the coming weeks and months, I’ll be sharing what I’ve learned through both experience and study — a look into the magic and the science woven into these practices.
My hope is that it gives you a glimpse into what I’ve dedicated my life to, and why I love it as deeply as I do.

Thank you for sharing another wonderful excerpt from in class this morning. I’ll share the entire reading for others to enjoy- “Generosity-
If we are lucky, life will humble us. We will be brought low by love and gratitude and find that place within us that wants only to be kind and generous. We may not have had much practice with these feelings, but we are willing to learn. We find that whatever time we have left we are more than willing to devote to learning how to love well. There is usually something we can do: a volunteer position, a training we can take; for some of us it is a yoga class to teach. Once we have embarked on a path of service, however humble, we find that we have bound ourselves to a path of self-awareness. If we want to be truly helpful we must learn to get out of our own way. The heart awakens the desire to serve; the desire to serve awakens the desire to serve wisely.“
