Over the past decade, a nonprofit called Health Bridges has helped make health care more equitable by providing vital language support in our emergency department for patients who speak Spanish, Mandarin, Korean and Vietnamese. It has also helped more than 1,000 of our patients enroll in temporary medical coverage through the Hospital Presumptive Eligibility Program.

Health Bridges was founded by former Pomona College student Hongdeng Gao and was inspired by a powerful personal story and a vision that no patient should face barriers to care because of language, income or status.

Hongdeng started the Health Bridges as a pilot program through a grant from the Napier Initiative, a partnership between Pilgrim Place and the five Claremont Colleges to encourage leadership for social change.

We are deeply grateful to Health Bridges, its founders, volunteers, and partners for their decade of service, compassion, and commitment to our patients.

“As we celebrate a decade of working with them, we look forward to many more years of collaboration to improve services for our patients and bearing witness to the positive community impact that Health Bridges continues to make,” said Richard E. Yochum, FACHE, our President/CEO.

At the 2025 Riverside Sheriff’s Department K9 Competition in November, four of our K9 teams proved that they are more than just great dogs, they are exceptional partners for us in healthcare security 🐾

K9 Forest, led by his handler Officer Jaime Hermosillo, quickly sniffed out a hidden explosive odor in a live scenario, keeping everyone safe and doing so in such quick time that he placed 2nd in the "Explosives Detection Building Searches" category 🌟

We are proud of all our K9 teams as they stood paw-to-paw against fellow law enforcement agency K9 teams across the region. Their hard work and dedication are evident in their ongoing presence at our hospital, which encompasses deterring incidents, de-escalation and, of course, providing support by reducing stress and anxiety for our patients, visitors and staff.

Please give a shout out to our K9 teams and rest assured that they are getting special treats for their superb work.

This December, Crohn’s and Colitis Awareness Week shines a spotlight on Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, two common forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that affect many people in the United States. The week is an opportunity to raise awareness, clear up misconceptions and encourage people to seek care if they notice symptoms.

In our new Q&A with Bhavesh Patel, MD, gastroenterologist, he addresses the most common myths, explains the differences between these conditions and highlights why early diagnosis and proper management are so important. Untreated Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis can lead to serious complications and long-term health issues if not properly managed.

Click on the link below to read the full Q&A with Dr. Patel to learn which myths are most common, what symptoms to watch for, and when to speak with your primary care physician or gastroenterologist.

For years, Diamond Bar resident Jonathan Ro thought his chronic acid reflux was simply indigestion. Just days after his son’s wedding last December, he received a call from his doctor revealing that it wasn’t.

At age 55, Jonathan was diagnosed with early-stage esophageal cancer—a rare cancer that can occur due to chronic untreated acid reflux.

Thanks to early detection and robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery by our thoracic surgeon, Dongning Zhang, MD, earlier this year, Jonathan is now cancer-free and finding balance with his new lifestyle changes.

Looking back, Jonathan wishes he would have addressed his acid reflux earlier. He cautions others to take symptoms seriously and to see their doctor in hopes that taking pre-emptive measures can spare people from a cancer diagnosis and save lives.

If you experience frequent heartburn, a persistent cough or regurgitation (stomach acid coming back up into your throat or mouth), you may be living with more than just indigestion – you may have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) 🗣️

“I usually see 10-15 patients every week due to these symptoms, and they often ask me how to know if their heartburn is something more serious,” says Nischita Merla, MD, gastroenterologist and medical director of Gastrointestinal Services at PVHMC. “If you experience any symptoms two or more times a week, it’s time to schedule an appointment with your doctor.”

At least 20 percent of adults in the United States have GERD. Many can manage their symptoms by avoiding trigger foods, elevating their head while at rest and wearing loose fitting clothing around the abdomen. However, according to Dr. Merla, a combination of these lifestyle changes along with medication, or endoscopic surgery, may be needed.

Untreated GERD can cause inflammation in the esophagus, scar tissue and, over time, increases your risk of developing esophageal and laryngeal cancers ⚠️

Tis the season for gratitude and joy...not unexpected trips to the Emergency Department. From decorating and cooking to celebrating on the road, our Trauma Center offers a few simple precautions can help keep you and your loved ones safe this holiday season.

🎄 Decorate safely: never work alone on a ladder and be sure to use the 1-4 rule: for every four feet of ladder height, place the base of the ladder one foot from the wall.

🔥 Prioritize fire safety: keep your Christmas trees well-watered, inspect your lights for damaged or frayed wires and never leave a candle burning unattended.

🍖 Cook and eat responsibly: watch how long food is left our at gatherings and always cook proteins to the recommended temperature before eating.

👟 Prevent trips and falls: keep walkways clutter-free from decorations, gift boxes and cords; wear shoes with good traction, especially during wet weather; remove indoor slip hazards by leaving your shoes at the door.

🚘 Drive responsibly: slow down, don’t drive distracted and ALWAYS designate a sober driver or use a rideshare app if you are drinking alcohol or consuming any type of recreational drug.

Stay happy, healthy and safe this holiday season!
