E-bike purchases in the United States are soaring, and with that, e-bike related accidents, injuries and deaths are on the rise as well 🚴‍♂️

Michael Jimenez, MD, medical director of trauma and acute care surgery at PVHMC, sees the devastating impacts of e-bike accidents every day. Besides fractures, soft tissue and internal injuries, head injuries are a serious concern for riders, especially those without helmets. These injuries can cause temporary or permanent brain damage, disability or death.

As of July of this year, our Trauma Center has already had 84 e-bike-related trauma admissions. Last year we saw 86 of these accidents, compared to under 50 in 2023.

What can you do to keep your family safe on an e-bike? Corporal Hayward from the Pomona Police Department shares these tips:
• always wear a helmet
• don’t carry anyone else on the bike
• be visible
• ride in the direction of traffic
• make sure the bike is in good condition
• drive sober
• obey all traffic laws
• ride in a single line
• do not drive on the sidewalk unless you are under the age of 10
• and supervise any child riding under the age of 10

⚠️ Please spread the word and help our e-bike users ride safely.

On August 28, 2025, the Jena-Marie Literacy Project donated nearly 150 books to our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Pediatric Inpatient Care Unit and Children’s Outpatient Clinic. The thoughtful gift was made in memory of Jena-Marie Ortiz, who passed away earlier this year.

Jena-Marie had a deep love for reading. She always carried a book with her, even to baseball games, and could often be found lost in a story. To honor her passion, her family created Jena-Marie’s Literacy Project, a non-profit that promotes literacy and offers comfort to families experiencing crisis.

The donation brings more than just books. It brings comfort, hope and connection to young patients and their families during challenging times.

“By sharing her love of books, people will learn about her and her story,” said her mother, Maria. “We just want to keep her name and memory alive.”
Through every book shared, Jena-Marie’s love of reading lives on. 💗

Did you know that listening to music can have emotional, spiritual and physical benefits, and can be used as a form of therapy? 🎼

We’re pleased to announce the official initiation of our junior and college volunteer music service program, Healing Harmonies 🌟

“Whether it be a young child in pediatrics, our Associates or patients, music provides an opportunity to step away from the current situation by offering comfort, peace and joy,” says Christina Mullins, Director of Volunteer Services. “This embodies the spirit of our mission here at PVHMC.”

The program consists of five violinists, two vocalists, one guitarist, and one saxophonist. Their performances have already had a positive impact on many of our patients and Associates.

In collaboration with our care teams on the units, members of Healing Harmonies perform for patients who request it. Songs are rehearsed beforehand, but song requests are always welcome.

We look forward to sharing with you some of their performances!

Healing Harmonies is currently looking to accept new members. To learn more or become a volunteer, visit pvhmc.org/volunteer.

It’s Fall Prevention Month!

This September, in honor of Fall Prevention Month, we’re sharing simple steps to help you get up safely if you fall—because knowing how to recover is just as important as preventing a fall. At our trauma center, falls are the second leading cause of traumatic injury. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1 in 4 adults age 65 and older experiences a fall each year, and many of these falls result in injuries that can limit independence.

Lauren Rossman, PT, Senior Physical Therapist at PVHMC Rehabilitation Services, demonstrates how to get up safely from a fall with easy steps that can make all the difference.

1. Stay calm and take a deep breath.
2. Check for injuries — gently move arms and legs. If you suspect a break, stay put and call for help.
3. Find something sturdy to lean on (chair, bed, table).
4. Roll onto your side, then onto hands and knees.
5. Push up with your strongest leg and ease into a seated position.

La Verne resident Lauri Balderrama, 58, had no symptoms and had never smoked, so she was shocked when doctors discovered a tumor in her lung. Thanks to our advanced technology and specialized surgical team, she became one of the first patients in the region to benefit from a groundbreaking combined approach — receiving both her biopsy and tumor removal in a single procedure.

Using the Ion robotic bronchoscopy for precision biopsy and the DaVinci system for minimally invasive surgery, physicians Derrick Raptis, MD, interventional pulmonologist and pulmonary critical care, and Dongning Zhang, MD, thoracic surgeon, were able to confirm Lauri’s tumor was cancerous and remove it during the same surgery — sparing her from months of worry, appointments and a second procedure.

Today, Lauri is back to walking and swimming daily, grateful for the compassionate care and innovative technology that helped catch her cancer early.

“I’m feeling much better, almost completely pain-free,” she says. “The doctors, nurses and staff at Pomona Valley are wonderful and they know it’s not just about the procedure; it’s about making a patient comfortable both mentally and physically.”

Sepsis is a life-threatening condition, but many do not know enough about it. Sepsis is the body’s extreme response to an infection, and without timely medical attention, it can lead to tissue damage, organ failure and in some cases even death. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1.7 million adults develop sepsis each year.

Fortunately, sepsis is preventable and there are four main ways to get ahead of it.
1. Prevent infections: Talk to your doctor or nurse about steps you can take to prevent infections.
2. Practice good hygiene: Remember, wash your hands frequently and keep cuts clean and covered.
3. Know the symptoms: Know what to look out for. Sepsis can include any of, or a combination of, clammy or sweaty skin, confusion or disorientation, extreme pain or discomfort, fever, shivering or feeling very cold, a high heart rate or weak pulse, or shortness of breath.
4. Act fast: Get medical care immediately if you think you or someone you know may have sepsis.

Huge shoutout to our sepsis team. They spent September actively raising awareness both within our hospital and in the community.
