With higher maternal mortality rates than most other developed countries, high-quality maternal care in the U.S. is more important than ever to ensure safe, healthy outcomes for mothers and babies. Our maternity team is dedicated to reducing complications, improving access and supporting families through every stage of pregnancy, birth and beyond.

That commitment has earned us unique recognition from the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative's 2025 Quality and Engagement Awards with the:
▪️ Quality and Sustainability Award for Cesarean Birth Rates (NTSV) for the third consecutive year
▪️ Maternal Safety Standards Implementation Award for OB Hemorrhage
▪️ Quality and Sustainability Honor Roll

“As one of the busiest labor and delivery hospitals in the state, we are honored to be recognized for our expertise and commitment to best practices that help mothers experience safe and healthy births,” said Dr. M. Hellen Rodriguez, Perinatologist and Medical Director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

Happy International Dog Day to our pawsitively amazing K9s – Clark, Kenzo, Moritz and Forest 🐾

Our four K9s are a vital part of our hospital’s security team. With continuous, extensive training, they are experts at de-escalation, detection, patrolling and providing a comforting presence on campus.

With their own unique personalities and quirks, they also bring joy to our patients and Associates. We are grateful for all they do to enhance safety at PVHMC ❤

Your baby may not be ready for a latte, but breastmilk is to babies what lattes are to adults: comforting, nourishing and the ideal blend of energy and fuel for the body and soul (not to mention the countless other benefits of breastfeeding for mother and baby).

Are you breastfeeding or considering breastfeeding? We’re here to help!

As one of the largest birthing centers in California, we recognize the importance of breastfeeding and the resources needed to support mothers in their journey. Our Lactation Center provides the education and tools moms need to be successful, should they choose to breastfeed.

Mothers can bring in their infants and have questions answered, concerns relieved and problems solved, regardless of where they gave birth. The Lactation Center is open Monday - Friday, by appointment only. For appointments or any other breastfeeding questions or concerns, call our Breastfeeding Information Line, available 24/7, at 909.623.6455.

Miscarriage is the most common complication of pregnancy in the U.S., with up to one million cases annually, according to the National Institutes of Health. There are many different reasons that a miscarriage can occur, but no matter the cause, the feelings of grief experienced by a mother and her family are all-encompassing.

In 2024, more than 350 women came into our Emergency Department experiencing a miscarriage. Though we provide needed medical and bereavement support and resources to our patients, we are deeply grateful to have a partner in Forever Footprints, which regularly donates memory boxes, sibling backpacks and memory bags for our mothers and families who experience miscarriage.

These kits give our families an opportunity to create memories with their beloved child and help them to know that they are not alone on their journey.

“Your baby is forever loved and forever remembered”🕊

Teen pedestrian safety remains a critical public health concern across the United States. Despite national efforts to reduce traffic-related fatalities, young people ages 15–24 continue to experience disproportionately high pedestrian death rates.

What risk factors are contributing to pedestrian-related accidents in teens?
📱 Distraction: use of mobile devices while walking or crossing streets.
🚸 Lack of Infrastructure: inadequate sidewalks, crosswalks and lighting in school zones and residential areas.
🚘 Driver Behavior: speeding, distracted driving and failure to yield to pedestrians.
🌘 Nighttime Visibility: teens often walk during early morning or late evening hours when visibility is low.

With the beginning of the school year upon us, now is a great time to talk to your teens about their walking safety habits.

As the summer starts to wind down and parents prepare their back-to-school checklist, Muzna Atif, MD, our medical director of inpatient pediatrics, says don’t forget your children’s immunizations.

Many childhood vaccinations begin at birth, and according to the California Department of Public Health, K-12 students are required to receive the following vaccines to attend school:
DTaP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis)
Polio
MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella)
Hepatitis B
Varicella (Chickenpox)
Tdap (for older students)
Meningococcal (Meningitis, often required for middle and high school)

A recent study found that childhood vaccination rates against measles fell after the COVID-19 pandemic in nearly 80% of 2,000 U.S. counties, including in states that are battling outbreaks this year.

“The recent measles outbreak in Texas should be reason enough to protect your children through vaccination, and since school starts soon, don’t wait until the last minute to schedule immunizations,” says Dr. Atif. “Together, we can safeguard our children against disease and contribute to a healthier, safer community for everyone.”

Thank you, LA County Fair community! 🩷

For many years, the LA County Fair's Help A Child Smile competition has brought cuddly comfort and joy to our pediatric patients — and this year was no different.

From handmade stuffed animals and cozy, colorful blankets to store-bought plush toys, each contest entry that isn’t taken by its owner finds a new home in the arms of patients in our pediatric inpatient care unit.

We are grateful to the talented and generous individuals who donated their time and creativity to help make a child smile.
