Before Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish year, there is a tradition called Kapparot. In this ritual, a chicken is gently circled above the head three times while reciting words that express the hope that any hardships meant for me will instead be transferred to the bird. The chicken is then donated so that poor families can have a meal.
As I held the chicken, I felt its heartbeat. It reminded me how real and profound this moment is, life is fragile, and this tradition makes me pause and reflect. It is not about the chicken itself, but about taking responsibility, seeking forgiveness, and entering the new year with humility, compassion, and a renewed commitment to do better.
May this Yom Kippur bring us all, no matter our background, peace, forgiveness, and the strength to begin again.
