Why Wound Care is part of My Medical Business: A Physician’s Commitment to Healing I discuss why wound care has become central to my practice as an internal medicine physician. As one of the first clinicians to identify patients with wounds, I chose to take action rather than do nothing. I explain my comprehensive medical approach to wound care—from creating the right healing environment with medications and innovative modalities, to managing underlying chronic conditions, and pursuing advanced therapies like cellular tissue products and hyperbaric oxygen therapy when needed. I emphasize that most wounds don’t require surgery; instead, supporting the body’s natural healing process is key. I’ve pivoted my practice to address the growing pandemic of chronic wounds in our community, ensuring patients receive the highest quality care. Informed consent is often talked about, but it is rarely practiced the way it should be.

It is not about agreeing quickly, signing paperwork, or invoking autonomy at the wrong time. Informed consent requires mental capacity, complete information, and a real understanding of what is being recommended.

As a physician, my role is to explain and recommend. As patients, your role is to ask questions and make the final decision once you truly understand your options.

If you leave a medical visit unsure why you are taking a medication or agreeing to a procedure, that conversation was not finished.

The next time you see your doctor:

Ask questions.
Ask for clarity.
Ask them to explain it again if needed.

Does your partner complain about how loudly you snore at night?

Loud, persistent snoring 😴 can be a sign of a condition called "sleep apnea." A person with sleep apnea doesn't breathe continuously; their breathing stops and restarts during sleep.

These pauses cause blood oxygen levels to drop, reducing the oxygen supply delivered to the brain, heart, and other vital organs. When oxygen levels drop, the heart 🫀 is forced to work harder, creating continuous stress on the cardiovascular system.

Over time, untreated sleep apnea can increase the risk of:
– High blood pressure
– Heart disease
– Stroke
– Chronic fatigue 🫩
– Poor concentration
- Reduced quality of life

Depending on the cause and severity of a person's sleep apnea, treatment options can vary. Early diagnosis and the right treatment can reduce heart stress, restore oxygen levels, and help you sleep safely and peacefully.

I often ask myself why patients follow my recommendations.

Is it because they understand the science the way I do?
Or is it because they trust me as their physician?

Medicine is one of the most rigorous disciplines we have. We test, retest, randomize, and challenge our own theories constantly in pursuit of the truth. We study disease down to the cellular level, even to atomic resolution, to guide treatment decisions.

And yet, what weighs most heavily for many patients is not the data.

It’s trust.

That trust determines whether someone moves forward with a treatment plan, whether they hesitate, or whether time is lost when decisions matter most.

This is why science alone is not enough. We also need to be intentional about how we communicate, connect, and build relationships with the people we serve.

Facts inform care.
Trust moves it forward.

Don't get caught unawares: your high blood pressure may be silently damaging your body.

Hypertension (high blood pressure) is called a silent killer because it often causes no noticeable symptoms. You can feel completely normal but your blood pressure is dangerously high. In this state, it places continuous stress on your blood vessels and vital organs.

Over time, this pressure damages artery walls, leading to hardening, narrowing, and plaque buildup.

✨ This can result in
* Increased risk of heart attack
* Higher chances of stroke
* Damage to brain and heart vessels
* Risk of vessel rupture or blockage
* Faster disease progression when combined with diabetes or high cholesterol

So be smart: get your blood pressure checked. If it's high, your doctor may prescribe medication, advise you to monitor your blood pressure and come back for regular checkups.

When I think about what it really means to care for a community, I don’t think about words. I think about access. I think about advocacy. I think about showing up consistently, even when the work is hard or inconvenient.

Love for a community can not be performative. It doesn’t live in statements or moments. It has to show up in the systems we challenge, the barriers we help people navigate, and the care we make available to everyone who needs it.

As a physician, this is part of the responsibility I carry.

To advocate when voices aren’t heard, expand access where it’s been limited, and keep asking why, especially when the answers are uncomfortable.

That’s what serving a community really looks like.

Every day, my patients inspire me, and the truth is, they bring just as much healing to me as I bring to them.

One of the most common requests I hear from patients is simple:

“Time.”

Time to be heard.

Without time, we do our patients a disservice, and with it, we also do ourselves a disservice.

In the exam room, I learn as much from my patients as they learn from me.

I see the limitations of my own profession, I see my own weaknesses, I see my strengths, I see my humanity, and yes, I see myself!

That’s why the true nucleus of medicine is the relationship between patient and doctor.
