We were delighted to host nearly 40 businesses for nibbles and networking at Bayer's Poolside Pub at our Aquatic Complex. The event was part of the Pompano Beach Margate Lighthouse Point Chamber's monthly Nonprofit "Coffee and Connections." The group provides a platform to share resources, collaborate on community initiatives, and build referral networks. It fosters learning and support to amplify the impact of specific nonprofit organizations. Additionally, JKV's VP of Sales and Marketing, Kim Ali, gave guests an overview of John Knox Village. We were honored to have JKV resident, U.S. Army veteran and Paralympic athlete Terry "Scooter" Hayes present her fascinating, challenging journey. Diagnosed later in life with an untreatable, degenerative neurological disease, she faced paralysis that now confined her to a wheelchair.

Not one to surrender, at age 58 she began lessons in wheelchair fencing, now known as Parafencing, and was immediately drawn to the physicality and strategy of the sport. In 2020 at age 63, Scooter represented Team USA at the Tokyo Paralympic Games, and went on to compete all over the world.
