Sodium and water always like to be in balance in the body.

That’s why when you eat salty foods, your body will hold onto water, like a sponge. If you eat too much salt, you hold on to too much water. This causes swelling. It also causes high blood pressure and problems for dialysis patients.

By eating less sodium, the body retains less water. This helps manage fluid balance better and reduces the risk of fluid overload.

Talk to your registered dietitian and see if these suggestions are right for you.

Did you know protein helps control how much fluid stays in your blood?
Your body makes a special protein called albumin. It helps keep fluid where it should be, in your blood, so it’s easier to remove during dialysis.
If your protein levels are low, your body might hold on to extra fluid, which can make you feel tired or swollen. There are ways to help!

Eating enough protein, drinking special nutrition drinks or pouches, and using therapies like IDPN or IPN during dialysis can help raise your albumin levels and make you feel better.

Ask your registered dietitian about IDPN or IPN therapy to learn if it's right for you.
