Periodontal disease, an infection of the gums, and erectile dysfunction (ED) have been linked in recent research. Studies have shown that men with periodontal disease are at an increased risk of developing ED.

The exact mechanisms underlying this connection are not fully understood, but several theories have been proposed:
Oxidative stress: The bacteria and toxins produced in periodontal disease can generate oxidative stress, damaging cells and increasing the risk of ED.

Endothelial dysfunction: Periodontal disease can lead to endothelial dysfunction, where the lining of the blood vessels becomes less efficient at regulating blood flow.

Shared risk factors: Periodontal disease and ED share some common risk factors, such as smoking, obesity, and diabetes, which may contribute to the increased risk.

Stillbirth:
In severe cases, periodontal disease can lead to stillbirth.

Chorioamnionitis:
Periodontal disease can increase the risk of chorioamnionitis, an infection of the placenta and amniotic fluid.

Preterm birth:
Studies have shown that women with periodontal disease have a higher risk of delivering prematurely (before 37 weeks gestation).

Preeclampsia:
Periodontal disease is associated with an increased risk of preeclampsia, a pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure and protein in the urine.
