DID YOU KNOW.... Delayed pain usually begins 24 to 48 hours after a crash but may take several days or even several weeks to develop, depending on the injury.

There are two reasons why it can take time for injuries to present after an accident.

First, crashes cause a spike in shock and adrenaline, releasing hormones that numb your body against pain signals.

Second, traumatic injuries often generate inflammation at the injury site to protect the area from further harm and momentarily mask the severity of the damage.

Wellness Wednesday tip - How can you prevent injuries in a car accident?

Here are 5 Quick Tips to Reduce Injury During a Car Accident

1. Always have your headrest properly adjusted. Ideally the top of your headrest should be level with the top of your head.

2. Keep the back of your head as close to the headrest as possible.

3. Don’t sit too close to the steering wheel.

4. Buckle up even if you are in the backseat.

5. Don’t allow passengers to put their feet on the dashboard. If they are in this position during an accident, it could result in serious injury.

Here are some tips on how to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in a safe and enjoyable manner:

1. Outdoor Activities: If weather permits and it's safe to do so, consider outdoor activities like hiking, biking, or having a picnic in a green space. You can still wear green and enjoy the day's festivities in nature.

2. Cooking Irish Cuisine: Spend the day cooking traditional Irish dishes at home. Try your hand at making classics like Irish stew, colcannon, soda bread, or corned beef and cabbage. You can even make it a family affair by involving everyone in the cooking process.

3. Irish Movie Marathon: Have a cozy movie night at home featuring Irish films or movies set in Ireland. Pop some popcorn, pour some Irish-themed beverages, and enjoy cinematic classics or contemporary favorites.

4. Learn Irish Culture: Take the opportunity to learn more about Irish culture, history, and traditions. Read books about Ireland, listen to Irish music, or explore Irish art and literature online.

5. Support Local Irish Businesses: If there are Irish businesses in your area, consider supporting them by purchasing Irish-themed goods, foods, or drinks. This could be a way to celebrate while also contributing to your local community.

6. Green-themed Crafts: Get creative with green-themed crafts or DIY projects. Whether it's making St. Patrick's Day decorations, painting shamrocks, or crafting your own leprechaun hats, there are plenty of fun activities to do at home.

7. Visit Irish Heritage Sites: If you live near areas with Irish heritage sites or landmarks, consider taking a leisurely stroll or drive to explore them. It could be a museum, a historical site, or even just a neighborhood known for its Irish influence.

Remember, regardless of how you choose to celebrate, prioritize safety and follow any relevant guidelines or restrictions in your area.

Here are some driving tips to help you avoid accidents:

Stay Focused: Concentrate solely on driving while you're behind the wheel. Avoid distractions such as texting, talking on the phone, eating, or adjusting the radio.

Obey Traffic Laws: Follow all traffic signs, signals, and speed limits. Make sure to use turn signals when changing lanes or making turns, and come to a complete stop at stop signs and red lights.

Keep a Safe Distance: Maintain a safe following distance from the vehicle in front of you. This gives you enough time to react and stop if the vehicle ahead suddenly slows down or stops.

Be Aware of Blind Spots: Check your mirrors and blind spots regularly, especially before changing lanes or merging. Adjust your mirrors properly to minimize blind spots, but remember they can't eliminate them entirely.

Avoid Aggressive Driving: Keep your emotions in check and avoid aggressive behaviors such as tailgating, speeding, or weaving in and out of traffic.

Watch for Pedestrians and Cyclists: Be especially cautious in areas where pedestrians or cyclists may be present, such as crosswalks, school zones, or bike lanes.

Drive According to Conditions: Adjust your driving behavior based on road and weather conditions. Slow down in rain and increase your following distance to account for reduced visibility and longer stopping distances.

Never drive under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medications that impair your ability to drive safely. If you plan to drink, designate a sober driver or use alternative transportation.

Maintain Your Vehicle: Regularly maintain your vehicle by checking the brakes, tires, lights, and fluid levels. Properly functioning equipment can help prevent accidents caused by mechanical failures.

By following these tips and practicing safe driving habits, you can significantly reduce your risk of being involved in an accident on the road. Remember that safety should always be your top priority while driving.
