Dr. Tim and his fellow 101 Wild West Rodeo Board will again be competing in the Cherokee Strip Cook Off in the People's Choice category! Stop by our team's tent and help us defend our 1st place Chili AND don't forget to grab the famous Echo Blanton chocolate chip cookie!

It is cookoff week! Come out Friday evening 4:00 to 8:00 and enjoy music by M-Pyre. We also have vendors and food trucks, beer and beverages. The weather is going to be gorgeous. Come out and enjoy a fun filled evening! Advance tickets are available at all local banks, Cherokee Strip Credit Union and the Chamber of Commerce. Advance tickets will also be available Saturday morning in front of the Pioneer Museum from 8-10 a.m.

Saturated fats
Saturated and trans fats tend to be more solid at room temperature while monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats tend to be more liquid. Saturated and trans fats raise the LDL (bad cholesterol) levels in your blood.

Food with saturated fat include:
-Fatty beef
-Butter
-Cheese
-Coconut oil

Many baked goods and fried foods can contain HIGH levels of saturated fats.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids -
Omega-3 fatty acids are "healthy fats" that support heart health and help lower your triglycerides. Specific types of omega-3s include DHA and EPA (found in seafood) and ALA (found in plants).

Omega-3 fatty acids provide your body with energy and support the health of many of our body systems.

Example of Omega-3 fatty acids include:
-Mackerel
-Salmon
-Sardines
-Herring
-Ground flaxseed (Doc and I put in our shakes)
-Walnuts
-Edamame (Echo's favorite!!!)

Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats -
Unsaturated fats help lower bad (LDL) cholesterol, lower triglycerides and maintain the overall health of cells.

-Natural peanut butter or almond butter

-Avocados
-Sunflower seeds, flax seeds and pumpkin seeds

TALKING DIETARY FATS THIS WEEK-

Types of fats and how they affect our health!

Dietary fats are essential to give our bodies energy and to support cell growth. They protect our organs and keep us warm. Fats help the body absorb some nutrients and produce important hormones. Our bodies need fat, but too much fat or too little fat affects our health.

The four major dietary fats in foods we eat are:
1 Saturated fats
2 Trans fats
3 Monounsaturated fats
4 Polyunsaturated fats

Facts about fats:
There are 9 calories in every gram of fat, regardless of the type! Fats are more energy dense than their carbohydrate and protein counterparts. Carbohydrates and protein contain 4 calories per gram. Consuming high levels of calories can lead to weight gain; however, consuming healthy fat helps suppress hunger and stabilize blood sugar.
Consuming high levels of saturated or trans fat can lead to heart disease and stroke. Most western diets are lacking in Omega-3 fatty acids, which area a type of polyunsaturated fat that helps lower bad cholesterol levels and decrease inflammation. Omega-3 fatty acids are also beneficial for your skin, vision, brain and heart.

Stretch it out -

Flexibility exercises enhance our range of motion, stability and balance. Stretching exercises are most effective when the muscle is warmed up through light to moderate exercise.

Stretching exercises will take about 10 minutes.

*Stretches should involve all major muscle-tendon groups.
*Hold the stretch for at least 30 seconds.
*Stretches should be challenging, but not painful.
*Repeat each exercise 2-4 times, 2-3 days per week.
*Greater gains in joint range of motion are accrued with daily flexibility exercise.
