🚺 Women’s Health Wednesday
🎀 October is breast cancer awareness month and a reminder that it affects 1 in 8 women and 1 in 1000 men in the United States.
🎀 Physical therapy plays a very important role in the rehabilitation of breast cancer patients:
1) Improves range of motion and flexibility for restricted movement in the arm and chest related to breast cancer surgery, radiation therapy, and lymphedema.
2) Reduces pain and swelling.
3) Improves posture and strengthens weakened muscles around the breast and shoulder.
4) Prevents lymphedema by promoting lymphatic drainage and improving circulation. Lymphedema is a condition where fluid builds up in the arm or hand after lymph nodes have been removed.
5) Enhances overall well-being. Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is experienced by up to 90% of patients treated with radiation and up to 80% of those treated with chemotherapy.
🎀Exercise is the number one most effective nonpharmacologic intervention for CRF.
🎀According to the American College of Sports Medicine Survivor Exercise Guidelines, 150 minutes/week of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes/week of high-intensity aerobic exercise is recommended, combined with resistance training and balance activities.
🎀If you or someone you know has breast cancer and has undergone breast cancer surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, or in the midst of these currently, physical therapy is very beneficial to help to improve function, mobility, and quality of life.
