Join us NOW! as Amanda Wright shares the remarkable journey of her son, Asher, from struggling to recognize letters in kindergarten to thriving as an eighth grader with new confidence, options, and a bright future.
As a young child, Asher was inquisitive, energetic, and “all boy”—he loved being active and outside, with no interest in sitting to color or practice letters. The only time he would sit still was to listen to his mom read books. While in private kindergarten, it became clear he was having great difficulty with writing and didn’t know many letters. He was miserable and begged to stay home. Despite starting occupational therapy, his handwriting didn’t improve, and Amanda was told to practice letters more at home. Highly trained as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Amanda knew she had no training about learning difficulties or dyslexia and was puzzled and very concerned by Asher’s struggles. She did not want her child to hate school and knew he had to develop essential academic skills to be successful in school too - he was plenty smart enough, that was abundantly evident from just talking to him.
The family then moved Asher to a Montessori school, where caring teachers helped him enjoy school again—but things still didn’t “click.” At age 7, he was privately tested and diagnosed with dyslexia and dysgraphia. A highly qualified tutor began working with him several times a week using Orton-Gillingham methods, but after a year his phonological awareness had barely improved. The tutor admitted progress was painfully slow and, by chance, the tutor had met Dr. Tim Conway. She asked if she could share Asher’s testing results with him, believing he might be able to help. Soon after, Amanda and her husband reached out to Dr. Conway and brought Asher to The Morris Center (TMC) in Ocala, Florida.
Through TMC’s high-frequency, evidence-based and research-based interventions to empower language, sensory, motor, attention/focus, literacy and more Asher made transformative progress. At age 7, Amanda says “The first time I ever saw him catch a ball was at TMC!!” Asher’s developmental challenges were not just Dyslexia, but included ADHD, Dyscalculia, sensory and motor skills too. However, today, 5 years after he attended The Morris Center for 5 months, Asher is thriving in 8th grade at his local public school. He no longer requires an IEP, attends regular classes, and enjoys school. While he keeps a 504 plan that provides extra time on tests, he rarely uses it. His spelling can still be a challenge without his laptop, but it is now phonetic and legible—something that was once impossible.
Amanda reflects on the incredible difference: TMC not only gave Asher the skills he needed, but also gave their family peace of mind and hope for his future. As she says, “No more constant worrying!!” TMC opened so many more options for Asher. NOW, Amanda and her husband are certain that with his grit and work ethic, Asher has the skills to do anything he sets his mind to!
