Recently diagnosed with Macular Degeneration (AMD)? Here’s what you should know:

🔹 Vision and Treatment: Most people with AMD can preserve good vision with proper care, especially those with wet AMD who adhere to their treatment plans.

🔹 Daily Monitoring: Using tools like an Amsler grid daily helps detect changes early, giving you an advantage in managing AMD.

🔹 Lifestyle Matters: A healthy diet, regular exercise, and quitting smoking can slow progression and support overall eye health.

🔹 Support Resources: Low vision specialists and tools like magnifiers or apps can help you maximize your remaining vision and stay independent.

Advancements in treatments are continually emerging, bringing new possibilities for managing AMD. With regular care and proactive steps, you can protect your sight and enjoy life’s beautiful moments.

What Does Macular Degeneration Look Like?

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of vision loss, but early detection can make all the difference. Ophthalmologists use OCT imaging to monitor the retina and identify early signs of AMD, allowing for timely and personalized treatment.

In the early stages, dry AMD often involves small deposits that form under the retina, which can gradually affect vision. Wet AMD progresses more quickly, as abnormal blood vessels grow and leak, leading to sudden changes in sight.

Thanks to advanced OCT imaging, AMD can be detected early, giving patients the best chance to protect their vision. Regular eye exams are key to catching these changes before they become more serious.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) affects nearly two million Americans, but understanding its causes gives us hope for future treatments and prevention.

While factors like age, lifestyle, diet, and genetics play a role, research has uncovered over 30 genes linked to AMD, including important pathways such as complement cascade and ARMS2/HTRA1. Some genetic variations may even offer protection against the condition.

Although genetic testing is not currently recommended, ongoing advancements in research bring hope for personalized therapies in the near future.

In the meantime, there are simple and effective steps you can take today to protect your vision:
✔️ Adults over 50 years old should have yearly eye exams
✔️ Maintain a healthy diet, rich in dark green vegetables and omega-3s
✔️ Stay active
✔️ Avoid smoking

By catching AMD early, you can work with your eye care professional to develop a plan that supports your eye health. Schedule an appointment at Palm Valley Eye today! https://palmvalleyeye.com/

Taking control of your eye health begins with understanding conditions like Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). AMD affects central vision, while peripheral vision often remains clear. Early detection plays a key role in managing AMD effectively, so you can maintain the best possible vision.

There are two types of AMD:

🔹 Dry AMD – The most common form, which progresses gradually and can often be managed with lifestyle changes and nutritional support.

🔹 Wet AMD – A less common but more advanced form, for which there are treatment options that help slow progression and protect your vision.

The good news is that regular eye exams can help catch AMD early, giving you the opportunity to take proactive steps to preserve your vision. With early detection, advanced treatments, and healthy habits, you can support your eye health and enhance your quality of life.

Your vision matters—schedule your next eye exam at Palm Valley Eye today and take the first step toward safeguarding your sight! 👓
