The patient had gum recession, which is one of the more common reasons why patients may want their veneers replaced in the future.

According to the prevalence data referenced in perio education, gum recession is extremely common, affecting over half of adults, and it becomes more common with age.

Many recession defects are anatomically driven, not disease driven. Differences in facial bone height relative to the gingival margin, including high crest, normal crest, and low crest relationships, help explain why some teeth are more prone to recession. Thin facial bone, tooth position, and orthodontic movement can all contribute without active periodontitis being present.
