In June 2014, John Treace, the CEO and Founder of Treace Medical Concepts, Inc., brought a group of talented foot and ankle surgeons together and posed a simple question to them: “What is your most frustrating clinical challenge?”
A spirited discussion ensued, but a recurring theme soon became obvious to all in attendance. Each surgeon there admitted to being extremely frustrated with the inconsistent outcomes of their bunion correction surgeries (osteotomies) and were trying to find a better way to treat their patients.
At this meeting of the minds, Dr Paul Dayton of Des Moines, IA, presented data that he had been collecting related to a new school of thought on bunion surgery: three-dimensional (3D) bunion correction. His early research and initial clinical experience was quite promising, indicating that 3D Bunion Correction™ could provide a more reliable, anatomic correction of the bunion deformity.
Intrigued by Dr Dayton’s 3D correction approach, the team delved into published clinical data and found several articles validating their individual hunches that the most common way to treat a bunion, the traditional 2D metatarsal osteotomy, wasn’t producing consistent and satisfactory results.
It was an exciting “ah-ha moment” for the team. Armed with these eye-opening revelations, the doctors and employees of Treace Medical were energized to offer patients a better alternative. Our goal was to establish a new, patented surgical technique and instrumentation which would truly benefit patients by addressing all three dimensions of the bunion deformity and its root cause, while also allowing for fast-weight bearing after surgery.¹
It was important that we came up with a technique which not only addressed all three-dimensions of the bunion deformity so that it would be far less likely to recur; but that this new technique would also take the “free-hand cuts” and “guesswork” out of the traditional surgical procedure so that all trained doctors could experience reliable and reproducible results for their patients.
And, that’s how (and why) Lapiplasty® 3D Bunion Correction™ came into being.
Four years after the initial meeting, it’s been rewarding to present clinical data of our own which confirms the dramatic difference between Lapiplasty® 3D Bunion Correction™ and the traditional 2D osteotomy procedure. A 13.5 month follow-up, multi-center study resulted in 97% of Lapiplasty® patients maintaining their 3D correction with no bunion recurrence.²
Together, with our surgeon partners, Treace Medical Concepts is committed to better patient outcomes and to Fix It Right The First Time.™
