CPM Candidate I am taking clients with due dates of March 2023 and after.

I am a Student Homebirth Midwife studying to take the NARM exam to become a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) in Early 2024. I work closely with my Preceptor/Teacher with each client and she will be with me every step of the way until I graduate. I am able to offer discounted services as a student although clients will receive excellent care at the hands of my preceptor and me. I have been called to midwifery starting in my early 20s. I've always wanted to deliver babies into the world but I knew I didn't want to become an OB/GYN. After attending many of my friend's births I decided to become a Doula in 2014. I loved helping birthing people throughout the process of pregnancy, labor, delivery, and postpartum but I knew I was meant for more. So I started looking into being a more holistic provider and found Homebirth Midwifery

In 2018 I had my first homebirth after having 3 hospital births. It was an amazing and healing experience. The peace I felt being at home and no pressure from my amazing homebirth midwife to do anything I didn't want to do was a top-tier birthing experience. This propelled me even further to be a homebirth midwife. In November 2021 my homebirth midwife and her colleagues were holding a class to become midwife assistants. I jumped at the opportunity because most of my doula clients were hospital-based and I knew I wanted to be more in the home birthing world. As soon as the class ended I immediately decided I was going to look into midwifery classes and ask one of the Midwives to be my preceptor. I did just that and started classes and attending births as a student in April 2022.

It's Black Breastfeeding Week! As a Black breastfeeding Midwife, I understand the importance of community and support during pregnancy and the early infant stage and how it sets us up for a successful breastfeeding journey. Everyone's journey isn't easy, some need extra encouragement, some need additional resources like Peer counselors and IBCLCs. With the racial disparities, there's an extra toll on black women and breastfeeding. I'm glad to be apart of something bigger than myself by helping and providing resources for my families I serve.

In honor of International Homebirth Day I wanted to share a short clip of my 2nd homebirth with my 5th baby who arrived May 22nd, 2025 at 1:21pm. My water broke May 20th at 7am not accompanied by contractions. I figured labor would start that day but never did. On May 21st my wonderful midwives Heather Robinson and Magdanah Isreal, along with student midwife Michele came to check on me. I asked for a vaginal exam because I was curious where I was. Baby girl was still very high in the pelvis, I was 50% effaced, and dilated to 1cm. I looked at Michele and said Vaginal exams mean nothing, she will be here tomorrow. So I had the best sleep I've had the entire pregnancy that night. When I woke up, so much amniotic fluid was coming out. At 9:30am I had a very intense contractions and then they started every 3 to 5 minutes after that. About 30 minutes later I was sending the bat signal for the team to make their way because it was so intense I knew it would be fast! It was definitely more intense than my homebirthed son 6 years ago. About 10 minutes later I was asking my partner to fill the pool. Everyone got there quickly including the cheer team of about 5 people. There were 9 loving ladies surrounding me as I howlled through each contraction. When it got to the point my body felt like it was splitting in half but really not urge to push, I decided to do a quick self vaginal exam and I felt her head about 2 knuckles up. On the next contraction, my intuition told me to "help" her under that p***c bone by adding some pushing. I did just that and felt a click at my p***c bone. I could feel her moving down after that with each contraction and I was pushing with each one. She came out with her right hand on her face (which we knew she would) and eyes wide open. I pulled her up out of the water and encouraged her to take a breath. I helped my own placenta out and was tucked into bed and fed with an amazing tuna melt within the next hour. My goals for the birth were, water birth βœ”οΈ, catch my own baby βœ”οΈ, have a birth were my community could come and support βœ”οΈ.
Quinley Love was a whopping 5lbs 8oz and 18 inches long at birth. Born at 37+4 weeks.

Breast milk is digested quickly, which is why babies feed so frequently (it’s not because your supply is low).

Your breast milk is specifically designed for your baby and contains enzymes like amylase and lipase that aid in digestion. Breast milk is also absorbed better than formula due to its perfect composition.

Babies are meant to feed frequently. It’s the way to guarantee lots of contact with their primary caregiver, which is beneficial for bonding, temperature regulation, and reducing stress! It also has a protective component, keeping them from going into too deep of a sleep (helping prevent SIDS).

Best of all, frequent breastfeeding helps baby gain a good amount of weight, and establishes and maintains a good milk supply.

Breastfeeding πŸ’œ

Did you know your baby has a "hand signal system" to tell you her feeding needs? Responding to baby's early cues -> hands to mouth, "pecking" at mother's face/chest while baby is calm will enable an effective latch and comfortable feed. As baby feeds her arms remain flexed with closed fists -> she's keen to feed. As her stomach fills her arms and hands soften, she relaxes and enjoys the bliss and comfort. When she's full she self releases from the breast - often with a milky face, closed eyes and her fingers (and sometimes her TOES!) fan widely. A burp might happen, or it might not. It doesn't matter either way. Trust baby's cues and signals. You soon become the expert about YOUR baby.

Happy Black Midwives Day! I am so thankful for the ancestors that paved the way and the generation that is here now STILL doing the work and STILL fighting to make midwifery what it's actually supposed to be. Black Midwives have changed my life forever, they helped me birth my children and encouraged me, trained me, and welcomed me into this field of work. I'm proud to be a Black Midwife!

In the mists of all the babies being born (3 in the last 5 days) we have to squeeze in time to see our 6 week postpartum families for our last visit and reflect on our journey together. What a beautiful journey it was with Paige and Jamal πŸ’œ Noelle and I loved assisting you for your very first Homebirth.
