Don't do what your mother told you to do at the dinner table...

Eat when your body is hungry. Stop when your body is full. Infants do this naturally when breastfeeding. This skill of responding to natural hunger and normal cues of satiety can be a huge asset for children for their entire lives. New research also finds that using smaller plates can help control portion sizes and ultimately will reduce the number of calories eaten.

Pilates Mat Class Start date, Tuesday May 16! PIlates Instructor, Deborah Pickett (361-249-4571) will offer at Karen Decker Fitness.
3 Mat Group Classes per week will be held on Tuesdays 11am, Wednesdays, 5:15pm and Thursdays 9am. PREREGISTRATION highly encouraged: 8 spots availble for each class. Price Per CLASS $20 payable directly to the Instructor via cash the day of each class, but multiple classes may be reserved and paid for in advance.
Contact Deborah Pickett directly at 361-249-4571 or text her with your contact information and chosen classes with selected date and time to be added to that days class roster. Walk-ins may be accomodated the day of class if space allows.
Please bring a mat and $20 cash.
Waiver signature required at your first entry and also Pilates class login-in signature at each class.

Numbing yourself prevents you from confronting your issues and keeps you from finding resolution or peace.
We are born equipped to experience a complex array of diverse emotions. Many of us, however, are uncomfortable confronting our most powerful emotions. We may shy away from delight and despair, and deny life’s colors by retreating into a world of monotone gray. We may numb ourselves to what we are truly feeling. It’s easier to suppress our emotions than to deal with them, so we may momentarily turn to pleasures such as alcohol, food, sugar, shopping, and too much television. We may even numb our hearts. While it’s normal to temporarily seek distractions as a means of coping with intense emotions, numbing yourself prevents you from confronting your issues and keeps you from ever finding resolution or peace. When you are numb, there might be no pain, but there also can be no joy or healing.

The activities that numb you may seem harmless or pleasurable, but using them diminishes the quality of your life. Numbing yourself so that you don’t have to feel intense emotions can often satisfy a surface need while blocking your awareness of a deeper need. You may find solace in food or shopping when what you really need is spiritual nourishment. The less you feel, the less alive you feel. Your feelings add vividness to your experiences and serve to connect you to the world around you. It is possible to disavow yourself of numbing behaviors a little at a time, and once again, taste life’s rich flavors. When you sense that you are engaging in a particular behavior simply to deaden your emotions, stop and ask yourself why. Examining the feelings that drive you to do this to yourself can help you understand what is triggering your desire to emotionally fade out.

With each numbing activity that you cut out of your life, you’ll find yourself being more aware and experiencing a greater emotional acuity. Senses once shrouded by the fog become sharp and acute. Traumas and pain long hidden will emerge to the forefront of your consciousness and reveal themselves so that you can heal them. You’ll discover a deeper you — a self that is comfortable experiencing and working through intense emotions with courage and grace.

Our mission is for each individual to know they are valued and their personal fitness goals are at the forefront of each visit.

In my 4th year as the fitness instructor in our island community of Port Aransas we were devastated by a direct hit form Cat 4 Hurricane Harvey. City facilities were damaged, tourism-the energy source for our economy-ceased on August 25, 2018. We have yet to regain the momentum we had and it will be many months more of rebuilding as numerous businesses were damaged or destroyed. The hurricane left in its wake not only the aforementioned devastation, but a community in need of the wellness benefits that physical fitness affords. With no city facility left and no resources in their budget when it was now essential to provide for immediate dire needs, such as emergency vehicles and first-responder facilities, it became evident that our townspeople needed a place to gather and 'sweat the stress off.' The benevolence of a local family, owners of Christensen Construction, offered their warehouse for a gym facility. Our little town is slowly regaining their equilibrium and fitness has been an important aspect to their personal restoration. Karen Decker Fitness offers Adult fitness classes, yoga & tai chi, dance and weight lifting/cardio/exercise equipment & Children’s TaeKwondo & Dance. The fitness center has earned a growing reputation as the place to gather and enjoy both the encouragement of group fitness sessions and the benefits gained through consistent, positive instruction and health mending nutritional recommendations.
